For the twentieth year in a row, the Dart Center for Journalism is offering the Ochberg Fellowship for talented senior and mid-career journalists. The fellowship is intended for professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, as well as those who wish to enhance their abilities to report on violence, tragedy, and other conflicts.

The fellowship’s founders recognize that reporting on violence and/or trauma is a major challenge, regardless of whether those tragedies take the form of humanitarian crises, street crime, genocide, or natural disasters. The fellowship provides the ability for twelve exceptional journalists from all around the world to explore these issues during a week of seminars at Columbia University.

During this program, fellows will engage in briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in mental health, discussions and collaborations with journalist colleagues, and other opportunities for intellectual development. The fellowship is led by a group of journalists and other mental health professionals from the Dart Center, along with a large group of visiting faculty.

To be eligible, fellows must have at least five years of journalism experience, but can be working across all media. Past work must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and its overall impact. A majority of the fellows selected will come from North America, with the rest hailing from the Middle East, Africa, the Asia Pacific region, Europe, and Central and South America. All seminars are conducted in English, so fellows must be fluent.

The final group of fellows selected will be chosen on the basis of past journalistic experience and the likelihood of personal and/or professional benefit from the program. This year, the fellowship will take place from July 22 to July 27, 2019. All application materials must be submitted by Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Questions may be directed to programs@dartcenter.org.

Women from all around the world are invited and encouraged to apply for the Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories. This grant is designed for professional journalists with three or more years of professional reporting and writing experience. All candidates should also be native English speakers.

Once you create an account with the portal, you will be able to log back in, edit your application, and view any changes or updates.
Each year, the German Academic Exchange Service invites journalists to attend a press tour regarding a relevant topic. These press tours are designed for both German and foreign tourists, and allow professionals to interact with each other as well as with German research institutions, universities, and corporate research and development facilities. These journalists receive a one-of-a-kind look at the German research landscape, with a special focus on science and economics. Journalists of all mediums, including print, radio, and web sources, are invited to apply.

This year, fifteen international science journalists are invited to attend a press tour to discuss the future of Germany and of work. In 2018, the conference will be held between October 21 and October 26.

The purpose of this conference is to address how the way we work is rapidly changing. Both automation and globalization, as well as digitization, are having a significant impact on the way in which businesses and individuals go about their daily work tasks. This press tour will cover topics such as how we will work in the future, as well as where we will work. It will address the skills and education that may be required, and whether robots or other intelligent or automated machines will take our jobs. This year’s tour is formally known as “Science Year 2018 – Working Life of the Future” and will explore all opportunities and difficulties related to future work.

This program allows journalists to meet influential researchers and key developers at research institutes, companies, and universities within Germany. Sample organizations and institutions that will participate in this tour include Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering, Cyber Valley, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, among many others.

Currently, applications are no longer being accepted, but applicants may inquire and receive more information about the state of their applications by visiting the program website. Information about the 2019 program will also be posted there once it is available.

The fellowship covers all related program costs, including round-trip transportation the United States and transportation with the United States during the program. Lodging costs as well as a daily per diem for food are provided. Personal expenses are the responsibility of the fellows.

To apply, interested applicants should submit a completed application along with supplemental materials that include a record of employment history and education, as well as two essays. The first essay should be no more than five hundred words and describe the applicant’s professional goals and achievements. The second essay should indicate why the applicant is seeking a WPI fellowship, what he or she expects to gain, and what he or she expects to contribute. A color photo of the applicant, work samples, copies of awards and fellowships, and three letters of recommendation should also be submitted.

Fellows are selected by the WPI selection committee, which is composed of like-minded journalists and corporate communications specialists, all of whom have international experience.
The International Center for Journalists brings thirty-six professional fellows together from twelve countries. These nations include Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru. The center is currently accepting applications for the spring 2018 program. Apply quick–applications close on November 13, 2017.

In addition to the initial fellowship, the center will also send twelve additional U.S. hosts to Latin America for two-week study tours. This exchange will allow participants to innovate and network with digital journalists, technologists, and media entrepreneurs. While working intricately with the Public Affairs Section of each country’s embassy, participants will learn about professional communications and receive mentorship in the field.

Each fellow will participate in a six-week U.S. program, along with four full weeks of professional attachments at the host institutions. Each participant will be matched with an American host across the country at digital communications firms and related industries. Before doing this, participants will engage in an in-depth orientation in Washington, D.C., at ICFJ’s official headquarters. During the final week of the program, all participants will also engage in the Professional Fellows Congress in Washington, D.C., where they will be connected with other fellows from around the globe.

This program highlights the United States’ diversity and culture, allowing fellows to become immersed in their host communities while developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
In addition, participants will spend four weeks with a host media organization, in which they will learn about all the digital realm of the United States has to offer. Previous fellows have been placed with leading organizations such as the Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, and the Huffington Post.

The overall goal of this program is for fellows to create media business models that utilize powerful digital tools and allow them to generate sustainable revenue. Students will be selected based on professional qualifications, relevant experience, leadership potential, and commitment to developing mutual understanding between the people of their countries. All participants must be fluent in English, and between the ages of 25 to 40. All emerging young professionals are welcome to apply. Questions about the program or application process may be directed to cbalfour@icfj.org.

The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government invites students to apply for the annual Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. This award honors investigative reporting that promotes ethical and effective conduct of government, along with the creation of public policy.

The lucky recipient of the award will receive $25,000, while five finalists will receive $10,000. The subject matter may relate to foreign policy, but the successful application must have an impact on public policy in the United States as well. The issue addressed in the proposal and project should be something that impacts the individual or team on a local, regional, statewide, or national level.

These awards are funded by annual grants from the Goldsmith Fund of the Greenfield Foundation. Applications for the 2018 prize are now being accepted, with a deadline for all submissions set at December 29, 2017. To apply, students should submit an application that includes contract and application details, along with a detailed submission of work. This submission should include the news organization, title of investigative work, additional involved news organizations, a one-sentence summary of the entry, and a description of the actual or potential impact of entry.

Applicants should also include brief essays addressing questions related to the “story” behind the investigation. Although the award is designed for individual professionals, entries from small and mid-size publications (as well as comparable broadcast/online outlets) are welcomed. Entries may consist of a series of articles on a particular topic, but the submission should be limited to no more than ten installments. No more than four authors should be credited per team.

Materials should be submitted as a link-friendly URL and print-friendly PDF. All questions (and applications, if desired) should be submitted to Tim Bailey at tim_bailey@hks.harvard.edu.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism has been offering fellowships to accomplished business journalists since the summer of 2014. Nearly two dozen journalists have since been awarded grants, ranging in amounts up to $15,000.

Applications for this program are accepted twice a year. The next deadline is December 15, 2017. Applications for summer programs are due June 30, 2018. Some time-sensitive projects may be funded as well, on a case-by-case basis. Potentially qualifying applicants should contact mcgrawcenter@journalism.cuny.edu.

To be eligible for the fellowship, journalists must have at least five years of professional experience in journalism. Freelance journalists, reporters, and editors may all apply. Applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of no more than three pages through the online form. This is somewhat like a pitch that would be submitted to an editor. The proposal should demonstrate that the story is solid and highlight what is new or significant about it. It should also underline why the story matters and what its impact might be.

Applications should also submit a timeline for completing the story, as well as three journalism samples. The samples should be professionally published work. In addition, a resume and references from two editors or others familiar with your work should be submitted. No budget is required at the time of application, but finalists will be asked to submit a budget later on during the application timeline.

Awards of up to $5,000 a month for one to three months will be awarded. In specific cases, grants may be awarded for longer periods of time. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to report and execute a complex project.

Candidates should also demonstrate a solid background or reporting expertise on the subject of the proposed piece.

During the fellowship, recipients will be supplied with editorial supervision. They will work closely with editors at the McGraw Center to edit, place, print, and distribute the produced stories. They will be published in print, radio, or digital outlets. In some cases, they may be published as e-books or through the CUNY J-School’s book imprint. They will also appear on the McGraw Center website.
