In 2015, the Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme was established to assist the creation of fully-financed scholarships for graduate students around the world. These scholarships are designated to the highest-performing students with the greatest potential to succeed, and were created in honor of the 95th birthday of Lord Weidenfeld.

These courses fund 100 percent of all course fees, as well as a generous living expense grant (at least £15,609) for talented students. Students may hail from various countries, with twenty awards given per year. Students must be full-time graduate students for the 2022-2023 year, and be applying to study full-time at Oxford University.

Most courses are eligible for the award, with a full list available on the Oxford Graduate Admissions website. Sample courses include Korean Studies, Syriac Studies, Computer Science, and International Health and Tropical Medicine.

Students who are currently studying at Oxford are not able to apply. Candidates must be able to demonstrate how their course of study and their long-term career objectives relate, and also be able to indicate how their professional work will contribute to public life and wellbeing in their countries of origin.

To apply, applicants should complete an application for graduate study by the January deadline. An additional Weidenfeld-Hoffman Scholarships Statement should be completed and uploaded, then submitted, with the graduate application. Applicants should take care to insert details about nationality and ordinary residence so that they can receive full consideration.

Applicants must be accepted and offered a place in their program in order to be eligible for the scholarship – candidates who are offered deferred admission or consideration are not eligible, nor are wait-list candidates.
Successful shortlisted applicants will be notified in April, with interviews following via Skype shortly after. Questions may be directed to the Oxford Graduate Admissions Office via their website.

Along with the Oxford NERC Doctoral Training Program in Environmental Research, the St Cross College are offering a scholarship for students beginning their DPhil DTP (Doctoral Training Program) at Oxford University in the academic year 2019 to 2020. Open to both home and EU DPhil students, the DTP seek to recruit from the following three subjects: The Physical Climate, Biodiversity, Ecology & Evolutionary Processes, and the Dynamic Earth – Surface Processes and Natural Hazards.

Available for students taking their DPhil at St Cross College, beginning Michaelmas 2019, the Graduate Scholarship funds tuition fees for home and EU applicants throughout the whole study, given that students effectively complete their Transfer of Status. Additionally, the college will provide an annual maintenance grant for home students, to the value of £14,999 per year, in line with the RCUK doctoral stipend. Moreover, successful scholars will receive priority for accommodation within the College for their first year; the accommodation will be charged at the standard rate.

Candidates who will enter the position of DPhil in 2019-2020 can apply for the Graduate Scholarship Doctoral Training Program in Environmental Research through the University of Oxford’s application form. For this particular program, applicants should list St Cross College as their top choice. Note that all applications should be completed and sent by January 18th, 2019.

Note that the College will automatically consider applicants who list St Cross College as their first choice, as well as those who apply ahead of the deadline. Successful applicants will be judged on their academic merit and the DTP will take place at St Cross; there will be no opportunity to change Colleges.

The University of Oxford’s Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) has opened an innovative network scheme for research across multiple disciplines. The University will sponsor a network of researchers who have a vested interest in transcending the traditional boundaries set up by many institutes by providing colleagues across various fields to either begin or continue working together on original inter-disciplinary projects.

The University will provide colleagues with £2,500 funding and will offer the Radcliffe Humanities Building as a primary venue and workspace. In addition, the faculty plans to offer applicants marketing in the form of web presence and publicity. Funding will be available for one academic year, but successful candidates may also apply for additional sponsorship from the John Fell Fund. Moreover, researchers may apply for a renewal of funding following their first year.

The University is very specific about the way that the funding should be used, and will only allow it to be spent on the following:

Guest speaker travel and accommodation

Event refreshments

Hiring additional or bigger rooms

Printing costs

Paying casual staff for conference support – please state reasons these staff are needed in the application.

The Network sponsorship should not be used for conferences, personal research, nor any research assistants. TORCH is very strict on how funding should be utilised.

TORCH seeks visionary applications that centre on a multi-disciplinary approach; they are not willing to sponsor those who could be funded and supported by one single college. Moreover, they encourage creativity when it comes to proposing themes and activities for the network’s future research. There are no limits on the size of the group, meaning that you can shape your own network. TORCH, however, does stipulate that the main applicants should include both postholders and PhD students from a minimum of three departments and colleges.

The University wishes to offer networks ultimate autonomy in the running of their research project, so welcome forward-thinking applications that have a view to building their research over their time at the Centre. TORCH is ideally seeking a network who plan to have a lasting impact in their work, whether that is through publication or self-sustaining work.

Applications should offer a brief description of the nature and importance of the anticipated research theme in just 500 words. In addition to this, candidates should provide a brief plan of budgeting for activities, as well as the names of the central network members to: torch@humanities.ox.ac.uk. Candidates should expect to hear back within 4-5 weeks.

As part of their Women in the Humanities syllabus, the University of Oxford is offering a postdoctoral writing fellowship, of 3-6 months in duration, to postdoctoral scholars without a stable or full-time academic role. This interdisciplinary programme, which launched in 2013, seeks to endorse and encourage feminist study across all the humanity faculties, from history, to literature, to gender politics. The programme itself strives to provide opportunities for women working across all areas of the Humanities by fostering and supporting research into women’s lives, past and present, as well as actively tackling everyday sexism both within the University and academia as a whole.

The writing fellowship, with a value of £5,000, will begin on January 13th, 2019. It is open to academics who completed their doctorate studies up to three years ago and are not currently in a permanent academic role. Candidates who received their PhD before July 1st, 2015 will only be considered if they have appealing circumstances. The University stipulates that the subsidy should be used solely for the purpose of travel and living expenses, as well as any research projects that aid their doctoral work.

To apply, candidates should complete an application using a specified template. Together with this, applicants should merge their CV into one pdf document which is to be sent to: alexandra.hughes-johnson@humanities.ox.ac.uk by midday on September 10th, 2018. Please note that the University will not consider applicants who do not follow the basic instructions of the application process.

Following an application, you can expect to hear from the University by October 22nd, 2018. The University will select a Fellow who proposes work which will meaningfully and substantially further our understanding of the portrayal, experiences, and lives of women. Successful scholars are also expected to regularly take part in the programme’s activities, intellectual and extra-curricular. In return, Fellows will receive a mentor in that area of expertise, as well as promotion of their work on the Women in the Humanities website.

Each year, the University of Oxford’s Torch Research Centre in the Humanities actively seeks proposals from qualified new researchers. The institute accepts proposals that will invite new, or develop existing partnerships in all humanities disciplines.

TORCH was launched in 2014 and allows researchers from all the humanities to collaborate with those from other disciplines, as well as individuals from other organizations and universities. The organization hosts a wide variety of far-reaching interdisciplinary projects and emphasizes the importance of broad research and intellectual risk-taking. The organization does not focus on one specific aspect of the humanities, but instead crosses divisions to create truly collaborative projects.

Proposals may involve new activities or develop current bases of knowledge. The proposal should enhance the university’s research and also benefit the external partner in some way. Most projects will continue after the duration of the fellowship has ended.

Each fellow may receive up to £12k to support a term of teaching or as a pro rata across the full academic year. This can also be paid out as hourly paid research or teaching assistance or similar projects. Individuals who are in the early stages of their careers may also apply, with a separate fellowship funding pool available. This pol awards a one-day a week staff contract at grade 7.1 (pro rata) with an additional stipend of £2000 for project expenses. All funds awarded must be spent by 31 July 2022.

Researchers will receive support throughout their projects, including assistance in negotiating research contracts, planning research, and promoting adherence to regulatory compliance.
Each applicant must be endorsed by their faculty. Early-stage applicants should receive an agreement from their senior tutors or line managers to be given release to participate in the fellowship.

All applications are due no later than October 11, 2021. Materials may be submitted online via the IRAMS web platform. Questions may be directed to ksupport@humanities.ox.ac.uk.

The Journalism Fellowship at the University of Oxford allows fellows to develop their academic knowledge of media, while at the same time improving skills, knowledge, and focus. Fellows will be given the time and resources to focus on an extensive piece of research, without worrying about the pressures of restrictive deadlines.

Reuters Institute Journalist Fellows will spend one to three terms at the University of Oxford. There, they will attend seminars by a range of guest speakers, who will share high-level insights into journalistic trends and developments. Each fellow will be granted an experienced supervisor to assist with the production of a research paper. This paper will later be published and promoted by the Reuters Institute. Fellows will also travel to world-class news organizations, such as Thomson Reuters, The Financial Times, the BBC, The Economist, and The Guardian.

Fellows may also embark on trips to UK cultural and political institutions, such as Oxfam, the House of Commons, and Stratford-upon-Avon. The ultimate goal of this program is to allow journalists the time to exchange ideas and experiences with diverse international peers.

Each year, around twenty-five fellows participate in the program. Fellows will strengthen their professional networks and develop a key global set of contacts. They will learn at the extensive Oxford facilities, including the Bodleian Library, and will have access to seminars and lectures across the university. Fellows will be given visiting scholar status of Green Templeton College.

The program is designed for ambitious, productive journalists with at least five years of work experience. All fellows should be proficient in written and spoken English. Fellows will work alongside other journalists, editors, broadcasters, columnists, and freelancers, and must demonstrate a desire to focus on a specific piece of research related to the media.

Interested candidates may apply online via the application form. Questions may be directed to reuters.institute@politics.ox.ac.uk.

Wolfson College is excited to announce the creation and availability of several new scholarships for graduate students beginning their studies in 2018-2019. Throughout the last few years, Wolfson has dedicated substantial funds to increasing scholarship support. In the coming years, Wolfson has promised to provide funding for roughly fifty of its students through full or partial scholarships.

A separate scholarship application procedure is not required for any of these new scholarships. Applications must be made by January for the chosen course. Applications will apply to the university under the standard procedures for graduate degrees. All applicants, regardless of degree programs, will be considered for Clarendon Awards. Graduate students applying for Research Council UK graduate funding will also be eligible for a Wolfson-partnership RCUK award. This award is generally granted to students who have listed Wolfson as their first-choice college.

The Oxford Wolfson Marriott Graduate Scholarship was made possible through a donation by the late Dr. Francis Marriott and a matched award from the university’s graduate scholarship fund. It covers the cost of a full award, including the university composition fee, the college fee, and maintenance costs. Preference is given to applicants who have listed Wolfson as the first-choice college. The Marriott Scholarship is available for students majoring in Biochemistry, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership, International Development, Islamic Art and Architecture, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Psychiatry.

The Wolfson Harrison UK Research Council Physics Scholarship provides a full-funding award for a DPhil in Physics. It is only open to applicants who are full-time residents of the UK or European Union. The Oxford Wolfson David Thomas Graduate Scholarship in Ancient Documents is also fully funded, but available for applicants from all countries who are interested in studying Greek and Latin papyrology and palaeography.

In addition to these awards, other scholarships include the Oxford Wolfson Ullendorff Graduate Scholarship in Semitic Philology, the Lorne Thyssen Scholarship, the Wolfson Guy Newton Clarendon Scholarship, the Wolfson Isaiah Berlin Clarendon Scholarship in Humanities or Social Sciences, and the Norman Hargreaves Mawdsley AHRC Scholarship.

Additional questions about these scholarships can be directed to the Wolfson Academic Office at +44 (0) 1865 274 100.

The Norman Hargreaves-Mawdsley Scholarship is now open for qualified Humanities graduate students specializing in topics such as Spanish, Latin American, or European History. This scholarship is only eligible for the previously listed areas of study. Two awards will be granted to individuals studying general European History, while one will be provided to an individual studying Spanish or Latin American History.

This scholarship was endowed by the family of Professor Norman Hargreaves Mawdsley upon his death. The professor was a renowned British historian who specialized in eighteenth-century Spanish and European history. This generous ward honors like-minded individuals.

The award is open to all postgraduate taught and research degrees, and will provide financial assistance for all course and college fees. It also provides a stipend, which is developed based on the UK Research Council rate. Course fees and living expenses will be awarded for full-time students in the amount of at least £14,553, while part-time students will receive a prorated study support grant instead.

Applicants are welcome from any country. The scholarship may be awarded as an individual award, or through partnership with the Research Council or Clarendon funding.

There is no individual application process for this award. All applicants, whether internal or external, should apply to the University of Oxford for the 2018-2019 graduate degree program. All applications should be submitted by January. Applicants will be evaluated for scholarship qualification when the team is reviewing admissions applications.

If two or more equally qualified candidates happen to be the final two in the running, the team will give priority to the candidate who has listed Wolfson as his or her first college of choice. The successful scholar will then become a member of Wolfson College. Applicants from all countries are eligible. For more information or to apply, candidates should visit the organization website at Wolfson.ox.ac.uk.
