The Linda Hall Library encourages doctoral students and other exemplary scholars to apply for the 2019-2020 fellowships. Candidates should be conducting research in the history of science and related areas. This includes topics such as science and technology studies. This fellowship provides researchers with a unique, immersive setting that inspires rich intellectual discussion and research. Fellows may also take advantage of the library’s close proximity to other research libraries and institutions.

The Linda Hall Library was founded in 1946 and is one of the leading independent science and technology libraries in the country. Its holdings document the science, technology, and engineering disciplines spanning from the 15th century to the present. Over half a million monograph volumes and over 48,000 journal titles are available in topics such as natural history, Cold Ware science, aeronautics, and more.

Each fellowship is designed to last anywhere from one week to four months. Several distinct awards are available, including Residential Fellowships and Travel Fellowships. The residential fellowships may last from one to four months and are designed for doctoral students whose work would potentially benefit from research conducted within the Library’s collections. Funding is awarded for up to $3,000 per month for doctoral students and up to $4,200 per month for postdoctoral students.

Individuals who reside within the Kansas City area may not apply for residential research fellowships. Recipients are expected to work full time on their research projects at the library, and housing is not provided. All fellows must offer a lecture or seminar to the general public while in residence, if so requested, and engage in seminars and other in-house events with other fellows.

Travel fellowships are geared toward researchers who wish to make a short, exploratory visit lasting anywhere from one to three weeks. Funding is available in the amount of $750 per week to help offset the cost of travel and living expenses in Kansas City.

To apply, candidates should complete an application packet detailing the intellectual, historic, and scientific significance of the project, as well as the importance of the Library’s’ collections to the outcomes of the research project. All application materials should be submitted no later than January 18, 2019.

The Massachusetts Historical Society announces the availability of two long-term fellowships for the 2019-2020 academic year. This stipend is governed by an NEH formula and awards up to $4,200 per month for four to twelve months.

Through this fellowship, candidates may also apply for a housing allowance of up to $500 per month, as well as for a professional expense allowance. Fellowships are open to any American citizens, as well as foreign nationals who have resided within the United States for at least three years prior to the application deadline. Fellows must have completed the training for the terminal degree in their fields, typically the Ph.D., by the application deadline. Fellowships may not be awarded to graduate students.

Each application will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposed project, as well as their relationship to the Society’s collections. Candidates who have not held a long-term grant over the three years prior to the fellowship term will be given priority consideration.

To apply, interested candidates should submit a cover letter, as well as an updated curriculum vitae. A project proposal of 1,000 words in length must also be supplied. This should include a thorough description of the project, as well as a statement underscoring the historiographical importance of the proposed project. A list of the specific MHS collections the candidate wishes to consult should also be supplied.

In addition to these materials, each candidate must also supply two letters of recommendation and a
“Certification for Participants” form. This is available as an external link from the application and may be submitted as an attachment. All materials must be submitted no later than January 15, 2019. Questions about the applicator process, or the fellowship itself, can be directed by email to fellowships@masshist.org or by phone to (617) 646-0577.

Harvard University’s Committee on Medieval Studies calls all those who have obtained PhD or equivalent to apply for their Visiting Scholar or Fellow Program. Although the program is not funded, Scholars will have opportunity of working with the university’s resources, from manuscript library, to various seminars.

Terms for Visiting Scholars and Fellows range from three to six months, depending on the nature of the research taking place. All students will have access to a wide-range of Harvard’s facilities throughout their stay. In return, Scholars are expected to share their research findings via seminar or similar public space.

The purpose of this particular Scholar Program is to encourage students to engage in the medieval world through the means of research, discussion, and dialogue. For this reason, Harvard University welcomes Scholars and Fellows who wish to work in any area of the medieval world, from religion to culture in Europe, Africa, or Eurasia. Scholars will be embraced into Harvard’s community of medievalists, known for their social and powerfully intellectual nature.

Since these positions are not funded, the visiting Scholars and Fellows must have the means to financially support themselves, and any accompanying dependents for the duration of their stay. Additionally, Scholars are expected to secure their own accommodation. Those who are not residents of the United States will need to obtain their own visa in order to legally enter and reside in the U.S. Harvard will expect proof that all Scholars are able to fund themselves, and accompanying family, for the whole program.

To apply, applicants should submit: an application form, résumé, a 750-word research proposal, and two letters of recommendation – one must be written by a member of staff from Harvard who knows the applicant and their work. Applications are accepted bi-annually; the deadline for those wishing to apply for Spring 2021 is Friday, 4 September 2020. For those wishing to join the program in Fall 2021, applications should reach the University by April 3, 2021.

The Max Planck Institute for European Legal History has opened a second call for their annual ‘Doucet Scholarship’. This scholarship, now in its second year, began following a substantial acquisition of works belonging to legal historians, Lourdes Lascurain de Doucet and Gaston Doucet. The impressive collection boasts almost 5,000 pieces, including historically groundbreaking titles in history, legal history, and science, spanning centuries of research across a Pan-American background.

The research scholarship, taking place over a three-month period, will occur from January through March 2019. This scholarship is designed for those residing outside of Frankfurt to utilize the institute’s extensive library containing the famous collection on derecho indiano. To be eligible, post-doctoral researchers should have a vested interest in these works; they should ensure that this famous collection is integral to their research on Spanish colonial law. Those living or studying in South America will be given priority.

Funding for provisions during the three-month program is, of course, provided. You will receive 44 € each day for 90 days; additionally, you will be reimbursed for air travel costs, with a limit of 1000 € for transatlantic flights and 500 € for European.

The Max Planck Institute for European Legal History plans to select just two research fellows for the upcoming placement. During the first call for the scholarship, the institute received a high volume of out of the ordinary applications, so be aware that the standard is high.

Potential research fellows are asked to apply via email by September 15th, 2018. The application should consist of a CV, a detailed description of the project, and a cover letter. Specifically, the cover letter is termed by the institute as a ‘motivation letter’, thus the letter should include, in detail, how researching the editions found only in the Doucet works relate directly to their future project.

Each year, the University of Illinois Foundation offers the John Rovensky Fellowship. Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2018-2019 academic year, each in the amount of $9,500. These fellowships are provided by the foundation established in honor of the late John E. Rovensky and support doctoral students who are writing their dissertations in U.S. business or economic history.

John Rovensky was the youngest ever vice president of the National Bank of Commerce and later went on to become chairman of the executive committee of the American Car and Foundry Company. He retained a profound involvement in economics and the academic profession until his death in 1970. The fellowship is the result of a gift by Mr. Rovensky to the Lincoln Educational Foundation.

These fellowships may be combined with other funding sources, such as grants or teaching positions. However, they are non-renewable. Applicants must be working toward Ph.D. degrees with U.S. business or economic history as the area of major interest. Recipients should be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited American university. Applicants who are preparing to teach or research will be given preference, as will those who have completed all graduate coursework by the fall of 2018.

A committee comprised of seven scholars in American economic and business history will make all final decisions regarding the fellowship recipients. Applicants are judged based on several criteria, including their academic ability and interest in business and economic history. This should be evidenced through a letter of recommendation from a professional who knows the candidate well.
The UEFA, or the Union of European Football Associates, contains fifty-five members associations seeking to develop their own research activities and projects in the analysis of European football. The organization’s research grant program was designed to support the work of qualified researchers who are either studying for or currently hold a PhD and are interested in analyzing European football.

Within the last few years, the UEFA has attempted to engage with the academic community by offering a series of initiatives to benefit both UEFA and European football. Their efforts comprise three pillars, including research, personal development, and change. The research pillar is designated to support projects directly addressing issues within European football. It is also designed to commission academic experts and centers to conduct specific, goal-oriented studies on behalf of UEFA.

To apply, all applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a representative of a UEFA member association that supports the research being proposed. This letter is designed to ensure that all projects are developed for and in conjunction with the national associations. Projects will also have the highest practical value possible.

In an effort to boost cooperation between member associations and European universities, the UEFA also allows three or fewer researchers to submit joint applications. These researchers should be based in the territories of three different national associations.

Each individual project is eligible for a grant of up to €15,000, and each joint project is eligible for up to €20,000. This funding lasts for up to nine months of research. Proposals may be submitted in Economics, History, Law, Management, Medical science, Political science, and Sociology.

Applications must be received by March 31, 2018. Questions about the program may be directed to universities@uefa.ch.

Wolfson College is excited to announce the creation and availability of several new scholarships for graduate students beginning their studies in 2018-2019. Throughout the last few years, Wolfson has dedicated substantial funds to increasing scholarship support. In the coming years, Wolfson has promised to provide funding for roughly fifty of its students through full or partial scholarships.

A separate scholarship application procedure is not required for any of these new scholarships. Applications must be made by January for the chosen course. Applications will apply to the university under the standard procedures for graduate degrees. All applicants, regardless of degree programs, will be considered for Clarendon Awards. Graduate students applying for Research Council UK graduate funding will also be eligible for a Wolfson-partnership RCUK award. This award is generally granted to students who have listed Wolfson as their first-choice college.

The Oxford Wolfson Marriott Graduate Scholarship was made possible through a donation by the late Dr. Francis Marriott and a matched award from the university’s graduate scholarship fund. It covers the cost of a full award, including the university composition fee, the college fee, and maintenance costs. Preference is given to applicants who have listed Wolfson as the first-choice college. The Marriott Scholarship is available for students majoring in Biochemistry, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership, International Development, Islamic Art and Architecture, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Psychiatry.

The Wolfson Harrison UK Research Council Physics Scholarship provides a full-funding award for a DPhil in Physics. It is only open to applicants who are full-time residents of the UK or European Union. The Oxford Wolfson David Thomas Graduate Scholarship in Ancient Documents is also fully funded, but available for applicants from all countries who are interested in studying Greek and Latin papyrology and palaeography.

In addition to these awards, other scholarships include the Oxford Wolfson Ullendorff Graduate Scholarship in Semitic Philology, the Lorne Thyssen Scholarship, the Wolfson Guy Newton Clarendon Scholarship, the Wolfson Isaiah Berlin Clarendon Scholarship in Humanities or Social Sciences, and the Norman Hargreaves Mawdsley AHRC Scholarship.

Additional questions about these scholarships can be directed to the Wolfson Academic Office at +44 (0) 1865 274 100.

Outstanding scholars are invited to apply for the prestigious graduate applicant scholarships at Jesus College. These scholarships support graduate study based at the college for students from the UK and EU, as well as international students. Various awards will be granted based on the area of study.

Humanities and Social Science students are eligible for the Albert Goh and Elizabeth Coupe Scholarship. This award is granted to a one-year Masters applicant in the Humanities or Social Sciences. It is given in the amount of £4000.

Specifically, History students may apply for the Gurnee Hart Scholarship. This award grants up to £5,000 for a one year course, and, again, is available only for students beginning a one-year Masters in History or historical studies.

The Embiricos Trust Scholarship grants up to £13,500 per academic year a maximum of three years to a first-year PhD applicant in Physical Science, Engineering, or Mathematics. Applicants for this award must be of Greek, G reek Cypriot, or British descent and nationality.

The John Killen Scholarship is awarded to one year Masters applicants in the Classics. Preference is given to applicants who are focusing their studies in the epigraphy and interpretation of Linear B, comparative philology, or the archaeology of Greece in the second millennium BC.

Applicants for these awards must have already worked out and guaranteed alternative funding for every year of study. In addition to these scholarships, a Graduate Research Fund is also available. This fund helps with the cost of attending conferences and research visits. However, this must be directly applied for. Graduate students may not undertake external paid work, but there are opportunities to work on a temporary and part time basis (up to ten hours a week).

All applications must be submitted by March 27, 2018. Questions, further information, and applications may be directed to graduate-tutor@jesus.cam.ac.uk.
