For the twentieth year in a row, the Dart Center for Journalism is offering the Ochberg Fellowship for talented senior and mid-career journalists. The fellowship is intended for professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, as well as those who wish to enhance their abilities to report on violence, tragedy, and other conflicts.

The fellowship’s founders recognize that reporting on violence and/or trauma is a major challenge, regardless of whether those tragedies take the form of humanitarian crises, street crime, genocide, or natural disasters. The fellowship provides the ability for twelve exceptional journalists from all around the world to explore these issues during a week of seminars at Columbia University.

During this program, fellows will engage in briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in mental health, discussions and collaborations with journalist colleagues, and other opportunities for intellectual development. The fellowship is led by a group of journalists and other mental health professionals from the Dart Center, along with a large group of visiting faculty.

To be eligible, fellows must have at least five years of journalism experience, but can be working across all media. Past work must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and its overall impact. A majority of the fellows selected will come from North America, with the rest hailing from the Middle East, Africa, the Asia Pacific region, Europe, and Central and South America. All seminars are conducted in English, so fellows must be fluent.

The final group of fellows selected will be chosen on the basis of past journalistic experience and the likelihood of personal and/or professional benefit from the program. This year, the fellowship will take place from July 22 to July 27, 2019. All application materials must be submitted by Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Questions may be directed to programs@dartcenter.org.

The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania offers a unique, strategy-based course to help professionals learn how to improve their positions in the marketplace. This course is self-paced and lasts around six weeks, with an average time commitment of three to four hours per week. At the low cost of just $585, it’s a smart choice for intermediate students or practitioners in Business or Management.

This graduate-level course is taught entirely in English, and is ideal for individuals with basic familiarity with business concepts. It recognizes that taking and maintaining a competitive advantage requires more than timing or a snap solution. It instead necessitates a thoughtful, well-implemented strategy. This course gives practitioners the tools and structures necessary to develop effective strategies.

Students will learn how to evaluate the success and modifications of their own strategies, as well as how to determine the source of a potential advantage. This source may encompass the internal, external, and dynamic fit of the strategy. Students will also be able to assess the impact of the moves of their competitors and how to maintain an advantage, while also understanding the factors that create and maintain competitive advantage. Upon finishing the course, students will have an idea of how to identify barriers to change, as well as how to implement a successful, advantageous edge.

The course syllabus will tackle basic questions such as, “What is strategy?” and also address the difference between organizational effectiveness and strategy. It will examine the importance of tradeoffs and the value chain, and also look at interactions among strategic choices.

This course is taught by David M. Knott, Professor of Management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The course is designed for busy working professionals and is offered entirely online. Graduates will earn continuing education credits that are often required for certifications and licensures.

The Journalism Fellowship at the University of Oxford allows fellows to develop their academic knowledge of media, while at the same time improving skills, knowledge, and focus. Fellows will be given the time and resources to focus on an extensive piece of research, without worrying about the pressures of restrictive deadlines.

Reuters Institute Journalist Fellows will spend one to three terms at the University of Oxford. There, they will attend seminars by a range of guest speakers, who will share high-level insights into journalistic trends and developments. Each fellow will be granted an experienced supervisor to assist with the production of a research paper. This paper will later be published and promoted by the Reuters Institute. Fellows will also travel to world-class news organizations, such as Thomson Reuters, The Financial Times, the BBC, The Economist, and The Guardian.

Fellows may also embark on trips to UK cultural and political institutions, such as Oxfam, the House of Commons, and Stratford-upon-Avon. The ultimate goal of this program is to allow journalists the time to exchange ideas and experiences with diverse international peers.

Each year, around twenty-five fellows participate in the program. Fellows will strengthen their professional networks and develop a key global set of contacts. They will learn at the extensive Oxford facilities, including the Bodleian Library, and will have access to seminars and lectures across the university. Fellows will be given visiting scholar status of Green Templeton College.

The program is designed for ambitious, productive journalists with at least five years of work experience. All fellows should be proficient in written and spoken English. Fellows will work alongside other journalists, editors, broadcasters, columnists, and freelancers, and must demonstrate a desire to focus on a specific piece of research related to the media.

Interested candidates may apply online via the application form. Questions may be directed to reuters.institute@politics.ox.ac.uk.

The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government invites students to apply for the annual Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. This award honors investigative reporting that promotes ethical and effective conduct of government, along with the creation of public policy.

The lucky recipient of the award will receive $25,000, while five finalists will receive $10,000. The subject matter may relate to foreign policy, but the successful application must have an impact on public policy in the United States as well. The issue addressed in the proposal and project should be something that impacts the individual or team on a local, regional, statewide, or national level.

These awards are funded by annual grants from the Goldsmith Fund of the Greenfield Foundation. Applications for the 2018 prize are now being accepted, with a deadline for all submissions set at December 29, 2017. To apply, students should submit an application that includes contract and application details, along with a detailed submission of work. This submission should include the news organization, title of investigative work, additional involved news organizations, a one-sentence summary of the entry, and a description of the actual or potential impact of entry.

Applicants should also include brief essays addressing questions related to the “story” behind the investigation. Although the award is designed for individual professionals, entries from small and mid-size publications (as well as comparable broadcast/online outlets) are welcomed. Entries may consist of a series of articles on a particular topic, but the submission should be limited to no more than ten installments. No more than four authors should be credited per team.

Materials should be submitted as a link-friendly URL and print-friendly PDF. All questions (and applications, if desired) should be submitted to Tim Bailey at tim_bailey@hks.harvard.edu.
