In 1995, the governments of France and the Netherlands created the Descartes-Huygens award. This award was dedicated to attracting quality researchers (in addition to an interested public population) to improve relations in scholarship and science. Every year, two participants are awarded a substantial grant to study in this area.

The prize consists of a grant of 23,000 euros, and it is designed to cover at least some of the costs of a French researcher’s work and research residency in the Netherlands. This can also cover sequential working visits by a French researcher to the Netherlands (as well as the other way around). While research is the main focus of this award, other activities that enhance Franco-Dutch partnerships and cooperation can also be carried out.

The ideal candidate will be a researcher who is in the early to middle stages of his or her career. He or she should be currently employed somewhere in the country of France and have contributed to scientific and academic work. The selected candidate will stay for at least three months in the Netherlands. This three months can be broken out into numerous visits or carried out all at once. Additional activities may be developed while in residence as well.

The selected researcher should be prepared to dedicate the broad public as well as focused researchers on the research project that was carried out under the financial support of the prize. This may be done through media appearances or through targeted lectures.

Each researcher at Dutch universities and research institutes may nominate qualified French applicants. The Dutch nomination form must be used. The form, along with a completed curriculum vitae sent as attachments) should be sent to the Academy via email. All materials must be sent via the email address wetenschapsfondsen@knaw.nl no later than July 1, 2019.

Awards are going to be presented to the French and Dutch laureate in early 2020. This will be done in Paris. More information may be found by visiting the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation’s website, or by contacting the email address listed above.

For the twentieth year in a row, the Dart Center for Journalism is offering the Ochberg Fellowship for talented senior and mid-career journalists. The fellowship is intended for professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, as well as those who wish to enhance their abilities to report on violence, tragedy, and other conflicts.

The fellowship’s founders recognize that reporting on violence and/or trauma is a major challenge, regardless of whether those tragedies take the form of humanitarian crises, street crime, genocide, or natural disasters. The fellowship provides the ability for twelve exceptional journalists from all around the world to explore these issues during a week of seminars at Columbia University.

During this program, fellows will engage in briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in mental health, discussions and collaborations with journalist colleagues, and other opportunities for intellectual development. The fellowship is led by a group of journalists and other mental health professionals from the Dart Center, along with a large group of visiting faculty.

To be eligible, fellows must have at least five years of journalism experience, but can be working across all media. Past work must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and its overall impact. A majority of the fellows selected will come from North America, with the rest hailing from the Middle East, Africa, the Asia Pacific region, Europe, and Central and South America. All seminars are conducted in English, so fellows must be fluent.

The final group of fellows selected will be chosen on the basis of past journalistic experience and the likelihood of personal and/or professional benefit from the program. This year, the fellowship will take place from July 22 to July 27, 2019. All application materials must be submitted by Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Questions may be directed to programs@dartcenter.org.

The invitation is extended to individuals from France, Israel, North America, the Arab region, and Central, Eastern, or South Eastern Europe. It is designed to expose candidates to how the Bundestag works.

Each year, the British Academy offers ten Global Professorships to fund the work of outstanding international researchers. These fellowships allow world-class researchers and scholars to pursue their individual goals while also improving the overall United Kingdom research base.

Each appointment lasts for four years, with the goal of completing an entire project of a single research focus within this time period. Professors will be expected to teach as well as conduct research, and should plan on researching some aspect within the social sciences or humanities. The program is designed for scholars who are currently employed outside of the UK in a full- or part-time position. Each applicant must be prepared to take up a long-term employment or secondment at a UK university or research institution.

Projects must be full projects within themselves, and while recipients are expected to teach and commit themselves fully to their research endeavors while engaged in the program, there is no set guideline or restriction for how the balance of teaching and research must be divided. This should be based largely on the host institution’s needs and preferences.

Applicants may be mid- or senior-level researchers in any field within the social sciences or humanities, so long as they are internationally-recognized and employed outside the UK. Recipients will receive up to £250,000 per year for the first three years, with the fourth year expected to be funded by the UK host institution. Applicants may begin their projects between December 1 2018 and May 31 2019.

To apply, candidates should submit an application via the British Academy’s Grant Management System, Flexi-Grant. All materials must be submitted no later than Wednesday, September 12, 2018. UK host institutions must approve these proposals no later than Thursday, September 13, 2018. Questions may be directed to intenrationalgrants@britac.ac.uk or 020 7969.5220.

Each year, the Project on Managing the Atom offers several fellowships for pre-doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. These awards are also available to mid-career professionals who are interested in researching topics of interest for up to one year with the possibility of renewal. Sample topics include nuclear nonproliferation policy, nuclear weapons strategy, disarmament processes and verification, the future of nuclear energy, regional conflict and nuclear weapons, security for nuclear weapons, arms control, and other items related to nuclear policy

Fellowships are designed for individuals who have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, including current university faculty members. Candidates will work in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. The program allows fellows to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, blending technical concerns and policy as they interact with an experienced cohort of faculty, senior fellows, and visiting policy makers.

Although fellows with any experience in research on nuclear policy may apply, fellows who intend to research the following topics will be given preferential consideration: reducing the risk of nuclear or radiological terrorism; stopping the spread of nuclear weapons; reducing the dangers of existing nuclear stockpiles through arms control or other means; and lowering safety, security, proliferation, and other risks associated with the growth of civilian nuclear power. Researchers should submit proposals highlighting their intended areas of research.

At the end of the fellowship, all fellows must supply a substantial piece of work that was completed during the fellowship period. Research will be presented at a public seminar one or more times throughout the fellowship period, and other seminars must be attended as well. Fellows must also participate in MTA activities, such as meetings, and regularly correspond with staff and senior faculty about research progress.

Fellows will receive ten month stipends of $39,600 (for pre-doctoral fellows) and $50,000 (for postdoctoral fellows). Applicants may apply for other sources of funding. Stipends also include health insurance and transportation passes, along with shared office space and administrative support.

To apply, candidates should submit a three to five page proposal, copies of CVs or resumes, an unofficial transcript, a writing sample, and contact information for three professional references. All interested candidates must apply no later than January 16, 2018, with recommendations due by February 1, 2018. Selected recipients will be notified by March 31, 2018.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism has been offering fellowships to accomplished business journalists since the summer of 2014. Nearly two dozen journalists have since been awarded grants, ranging in amounts up to $15,000.

Applications for this program are accepted twice a year. The next deadline is December 15, 2017. Applications for summer programs are due June 30, 2018. Some time-sensitive projects may be funded as well, on a case-by-case basis. Potentially qualifying applicants should contact mcgrawcenter@journalism.cuny.edu.

To be eligible for the fellowship, journalists must have at least five years of professional experience in journalism. Freelance journalists, reporters, and editors may all apply. Applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of no more than three pages through the online form. This is somewhat like a pitch that would be submitted to an editor. The proposal should demonstrate that the story is solid and highlight what is new or significant about it. It should also underline why the story matters and what its impact might be.

Applications should also submit a timeline for completing the story, as well as three journalism samples. The samples should be professionally published work. In addition, a resume and references from two editors or others familiar with your work should be submitted. No budget is required at the time of application, but finalists will be asked to submit a budget later on during the application timeline.

Awards of up to $5,000 a month for one to three months will be awarded. In specific cases, grants may be awarded for longer periods of time. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to report and execute a complex project.

Candidates should also demonstrate a solid background or reporting expertise on the subject of the proposed piece.

During the fellowship, recipients will be supplied with editorial supervision. They will work closely with editors at the McGraw Center to edit, place, print, and distribute the produced stories. They will be published in print, radio, or digital outlets. In some cases, they may be published as e-books or through the CUNY J-School’s book imprint. They will also appear on the McGraw Center website.

Emerging and mid-career artists are encouraged to apply to be visiting artists at the Harvard University South Asia Institute’s Arts Program. The program is intended to explore critical issues in South Asia through art and design. Applicants who are chosen to be visiting artists will attend Harvard University to engage in interdisciplinary conversations with students and faculty about global issues relevant to South Asia.

Only four artists will be chosen each academic year, and the residency lasts two months at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Two of the artists will attend during the fall semester, and the other two will attend for the spring semester. During the residency, the Institute will develop events and exhibits with various faculty members across different departments which coordinate with undergraduate curricula. If selected, you will be required to host an open studio exhibition, where you will show either a work in progress or a completed project. You must also be prepared to give a presentation about your practice and approach to your craft.

The visiting artists program is funded, and recipients will receive a stipend to cover exhibit-related costs, as well as cultural excursions in the New England area. Additionally, your travel, living accommodations for the two-month residency, and meals will be covered by the Institute.

The South Asian Institute has eligibility requirements for potential applicants, with some applicants receiving special consideration for various reasons. First, the basic requirements. You must be a South Asian artist, and you can work in any medium, as long as your practice is a response to sociopolitical developments in that region. To be considered a South Asian artist, you must reside in that region (i.e., Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka), and you must hold a valid passport with eligibility for the appropriate visa. The Institute is specifically interested in engaging with artists from countries with less representation on Harvard’s campus, so preference will go to artists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka. Additionally, artists whose proposals directly relate to the Institute’s research foci will receive preference. You can apply if you do not have professional training from an accredited institution, but those with formal training will receive preference during the application vetting.

The visiting artist program is intended for emerging and mid-career artists who have had limited opportunities to exhibit or work abroad, which means more accomplished artists need not apply. Those who are selected for the residency will benefit from connections with Harvard faculty and students while exhibiting their work in an internationally recognized venue.

To apply for the visiting artists program, you will have to complete an online application, submit your resume/CV, and provide a written personal statement. The personal statement must be no longer than two pages and should outline your project proposal, including how it would benefit from being hosted at Harvard, which departments and faculty would be helpful for your research, and whether you would need access to the Harvard Art Museums’ collections. You will also need to submit a work portfolio and two recommendation letters. The application deadline for the 2017-2018 academic year is July 17th, 2017.

If you meet the eligibility requirements and are prepared to spend two months living and working at one of the world’s most renown universities, then this visiting artist program is right for you.
