The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is actively seeking potential leaders who are interested in developing their own project ideas and embarking on the experience of a lifetime. The German Chancellor Fellowship is open to students from India, Russia, China, and the United States, and allows scholars to work closely with hosts of their own choosing to build unique projects.

The fellowship features a monthly stipend ranging from 2,170 euros to 2,770 euros, depending on qualifications. It includes attentive individual mentoring during the fellow’s stay in Germany, as well as financial support for family members, travel expenses, and German language study. The fellowship also features cultural study tours of Germany as well as social networking events with representatives from German companies and institutions. Fellows are given the resources to make connections with alumni of the program as well, helping them to collaborate and gain professional experiences.

The fellowship exposes candidates to contemporary issues in their individual fields of study, allowing them to make long-term public impacts. Fellows are expected to expand their knowledge in their topic area while working in Germany, as well as to gain experiences in intercultural skills. Once the fellowship has ended, fellows will act as intermediaries between Germany and their host countries.

The program commences in August in Germany with a significant two-month German language course. Reductions or extensions of this course can be granted if necessary. In October, fellows then move on to a seminar in Bonn and then Berlin. These seminars provide fellows with the training and insights necessary in social, political, economic, and cultural life in Germany. After this period, fellows then work on their individual projects for eleven months.

Eligible candidates are those who completed a first degree less than twelve years ago and are interested in spending a year working on self-designed projects. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that their projects are of social significance. They should also indicate how the project has potential to make connections between Germany and the applicant’s host country. Applicants from the political, economic, media, administration, and cultural sectors are encouraged and invited to apply.

In addition to evidence of a degree completed no more than twelve years ago, fellows must also submit documentation evincing proven leadership experience, as well as a two-page letter of motivation and a three-page project plan. Two references and a host statement must also be supplied. All application materials must be received no later than October 15, 2022.

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award was designed for top-ranked junior researchers who are planning on working abroad. Financed in part by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, this award is granted to candidates who have completed their doctorates. The award is granted to those who have finished doctorate study within the past six years, and with distinction.

Candidates must have published their work in recognized international journals for publishing houses of prestige. The award allows recipients to spend a period of roughly five years contributing to a working group as they develop innovative, high-caliber research projects of their own design. These projects can be carried out at any research institution (of the applicant’s own choosing) in Germany.

Applicants from all disciplines may submit their materials no later than July 31, 2019. All application materials should be submitted to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, who will grant no more than six Sofja Kovalevskaja Awards per year. The total award is valued at €1.65 million.

To apply, candidate must have received a doctorate or equivalent academic program or certification with distinction no less than six years before the deadline for application submissions. This award allows recipients to pursue leadership positions for the first time in their careers in Germany. Therefore, applicants must not have already held or currently hold an offer of employment in Germany.

Candidates should also have academic achievements that are considered highly advanced for their field. These will be documented via a list of publications that were reviewed and published in academic journals or publishing houses. Applicants should have the support of a German host institution, as well as two expert reviews from academics that support the candidate’s work. Applicants should have good language proficiency in either German or English, and cannot have received a Sofja Kovalevskaja Award in the past.

Applicants should have lived outside the country of Germany for at least one year in the 18-month period that falls before the application submission deadline. Each candidate must find his or her own academic host, but there are several networks and search engines available on the Humboldt Foundation’s website to help candidates find these connections.

Sponsorships begin in Germany in the calendar year that the award is granted. The exact start date will be decided upon with the host institution, ideally prior to the submission of an application.

The German Parliament invites talented, politically-minded students to work with them for five months. The invitation is extended to individuals from France, Israel, North America, the Arab region, and Central, Eastern, or South Eastern Europe. It is designed to expose candidates to how the Bundestag works.

The program lasts five months, with three spent working in a Member’s office. The program is funded by the German Bundestag in cooperation with Technische Universitat Berlin, Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin and the Freie Universitat Berlin. The program runs from March 1 to July 31 each year.

In part, the goal of the program is to foster positive relationships between Germany and participating countries, as well as to instill in students a deeper understanding of cultural diversity. It hopes to support the development of peaceful global coexistence and to spread democratic values and positive relationships.

If accepted, each student will be invited to attend a number of seminars and special events, as well as to partake in a tailored work placement. Candidates will receive introductions to the academic life of the Belrin universities and an insight into parliamentary work at the beginning of their programs. Afterwards, candidates will work full-time with a Member of Parliament as they produce reports, draft speeches, prepare meetings, and conduct other administrative tasks. Candidates will also have the opportunity to attend meetings, parliamentary groups, and to visit the Member’s constituency. Throughout the duration of the program, students can take up to two courses at one of Berlin’s universities.

Candidates will receive a monthly scholarship which consists of 500 euros per month, free health, accident, and liability insurance, travel expenses, and accommodations. To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of a participation country and be in possession of a university degree. They should have strong command of the German language and be under the age of thirty when the scholarship commences.
Following the example set by Albert Einstein, the Einstein Forum and the Daimler and Benz Foundation offer a fellowship for prominent young thinkers. Applicants to this fellowship must possess the desire to pursue a project in a field that is drastically different from that of their previous research. Like Albert Einstein himself, applicants must possess the willingness to explore interdisciplinary approaches.

Each fellow will receive funding for living accommodations for five to six months in the garden cottage of Einstein’s own summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg. This housing is only a short trip away from the significant academic institutions of Potsdam and Berlin. The fellow will also receive reimbursement of qualified travel expenses, and a stipend of up to 10,000 euros.

In return, fellows will be tasked with presenting his or her final project at the Einstein Forum an at the Daimler and Benz Foundation. Therefore, this project is not designed for individuals who want to complete an academic study that has already been started prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Fellows should carefully delineate the quality and feasibility of their projects–as well as their own intellectual abilities–in their project proposals.

This fellowship is not exclusively for individuals who already hold a PhD. However, no fellowships are granted for dissertation research, as the project must be different in content from the applicant’s previous work. While the project does not need to be completed in its entirety during the course of the fellowship, this is preferred.

Applicants must be under the age of thirty five and possess a degree in social sciences, natural sciences, or the humanities. To apply, candidates should submit a CV, a project proposal (of roughly two pages), and two letters of recommendation. All applications must be received no later than April 15, 2018. Materials may be sent via email to fellowship@einsteinforum.de or by mail.

The Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin is one of the most significant centers for biomedical research in the world, ranked by Thompson Reuters in the top twenty best research institutes for molecular biology and genetics. Since 1992, the MDC has dedicated itself to translating scientific advancements into applications which can prevent, diagnose, and treat human diseases. Students who want to further their studies in molecular medicine can benefit from the center’s decades of expertise by applying to its international doctoral program.

MDC’s International PhD Program provides structured training for doctoral researchers in various areas of biomedical science, including cardiovascular and metabolic research; cancer biology and immunology; neuroscience; developmental biology; and medical systems biology and bioinformatics. Other areas of research include structural biology, imaging, and biophysics. Doctoral researchers will join a group of more than 350 other PhD students at the center, all exploring cutting-edge scientific research in their field of inquiry. Approximately 40% of MDC’s PhD students are from countries outside Germany, meaning enrollees benefit from an international community of like-minded scientists.

Doctoral students are supported in their studies by the MDC in various ways. Students are offered annual committee meetings to help ensure that they are on track for successful completion of their studies. They also benefit from various lectures and seminars, methods courses, transferable skills courses, and career workshops intended to prepare researchers for an international career in science. Doctoral researchers are fully funded for three years, and contracts are often extended for an additional year. All students are expected to complete their research and thesis in four years. The MDC offers competitive salaries for its PhD researchers, and it charges no tuition.

Additionally, doctoral students can enroll in exchange programs or a specialized research school. For example, MDC students can study systems biology at New York University or myology at schools in Paris. Other partners include various institutions in Israel for the study of cell signaling and gene regulation and the University of Arizona in the United States for translational cardiovascular and metabolic medicine. Across all these campuses and areas, students join world-class researchers to tackle important biomedical questions.

The MDC stimulates students not only intellectually, but culturally, as well. The center is located in Berlin – Germany’s largest city and capital. Not only is the city home to historic landmarks and cultural attractions, it also possesses a dynamic scene of pubs, clubs, restaurants, and cafes. Berlin offers its residents a truly cosmopolitan lifestyle where cityscapes are interspersed with large, vibrant green spaces and a multicultural, multinational populace.

An application for the MDC’s International PhD program can be completed online, and you will be required to provide information about your education and training, a motivation letter, and two references. If you are accepted into the program, you will then be invited to Berlin for an interview at the MDC.
