Each year, Harvard University aims to attract and support rising young talent. Junior Scholars often find it difficult to gain access to prestigious universities, usually after they have just received their doctorates. They suffer from limited funding and issues related to curriculum development, which makes it tough to gain leverage in their academic careers.

As a result, the university offers an exceptional opportunity to provide funding to these individuals to carry out their research at Harvard University. The grants address scholars who have recently received their doctorate degrees, allowing them to strengthen their connections with others in the field and to promote the connection between their home universities and Harvard. These fellowships also allow these candidates to gain additional or new skills in their field.

The program is designed for candidates who have recently received their Ph.D. with honors, with most fields of study accepted for the program. Candidates who have backgrounds in sciences, law, humanities, public health, medicine, economy, political science, sociology, engineering, education, architecture, or any other field of study available at Harvard are eligible to apply.

To be eligible, individuals must have completed their Ph.D. at any of the RCC member universities between May 1, 2019, and April 30, 2020, and have graduated with the highest academic distinction. They should provide an admission letter from the Harvard University department, research center, or school stating that they are supporting the applicant’s research project and/or sponsoring their J-1 Visa. They should provide a valid TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 100 points.

To apply, candidates should visit the Harvard University website and fill out and submit the online application form. They will need to provide a certificate of having been granting a PhD, along with certificate of having enjoyed an Autonomous Community PhD program, FPU, FPI, or University PhD program scholarship. A detailed curriculum vitae and copy of an admission letter from the Harvard research center, school, or department supporting the research project should also be supplied.

Finally, a detailed research proposal for the project that will be carried out during the tenure at Harvard, in more than ten pages, must also be supplied. All materials are due no later than June 30, at 11:59 p.m.

A bibliography of works and three references should also be supplied.

Applicants may be from any research area in the humanities or social sciences, as well as professional fields like architecture or law. Candidates who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences, or related professional fields are preferred, but individuals without continuous academic careers may also be considered.

Each year, the British Academy offers ten Global Professorships to fund the work of outstanding international researchers. These fellowships allow world-class researchers and scholars to pursue their individual goals while also improving the overall United Kingdom research base.

Each appointment lasts for four years, with the goal of completing an entire project of a single research focus within this time period. Professors will be expected to teach as well as conduct research, and should plan on researching some aspect within the social sciences or humanities. The program is designed for scholars who are currently employed outside of the UK in a full- or part-time position. Each applicant must be prepared to take up a long-term employment or secondment at a UK university or research institution.

Projects must be full projects within themselves, and while recipients are expected to teach and commit themselves fully to their research endeavors while engaged in the program, there is no set guideline or restriction for how the balance of teaching and research must be divided. This should be based largely on the host institution’s needs and preferences.

Applicants may be mid- or senior-level researchers in any field within the social sciences or humanities, so long as they are internationally-recognized and employed outside the UK. Recipients will receive up to £250,000 per year for the first three years, with the fourth year expected to be funded by the UK host institution. Applicants may begin their projects between December 1 2018 and May 31 2019.

To apply, candidates should submit an application via the British Academy’s Grant Management System, Flexi-Grant. All materials must be submitted no later than Wednesday, September 12, 2018. UK host institutions must approve these proposals no later than Thursday, September 13, 2018. Questions may be directed to intenrationalgrants@britac.ac.uk or 020 7969.5220.

The Paris Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), alongside the University of Paris-Saclay, has opened positions for two research chairs and is initiating a call for applications. These positions as Chair will run consecutively, with 6 months duration each, one in academic year 2018-2019, and the second in 2019-2020.

The Institute calls for applicants who are either: senior university professors or researchers; or junior scholars. Senior professors must be currently employed by a university or research facility or must hold emeritus status. The University also stipulates that senior professors have had at least 10 years’ experience following their PhD. Junior scholars must hold postdoctoral researcher status or have a current position in a university or research organisation. For these applicants, it is a requirement that they have research experience of 2-9 years following the PhD.

Each Paris-Saclay Research Chair will have the chance to work closely with laboratories in Paris-Saclay and will have the advantage of a science-focused work environment in Paris IAS. The position of the Research Chair is intended to be inter-disciplinary across the humanities and social sciences. Applicants are expected to propose ground-breaking, risk-taking research. The University will consider candidates who plan to research and carry out project work on: ‘markets, business, work and innovation’, ‘heritage, culture and knowledge’, or ‘sciences and society’.

Applications can be found on the University’s website and should be submitted by August 31, 2018 at noon (GMT+2). Take note that applicants who have lived in France for 12 months in total, over the past three years, cannot be taken into consideration. Candidates should also be bilingual in English and French: both languages are required for scientific and social aspects of the Chair.

The Polish Institute of Advanced Studies has issued an open call for fellowship applications for the 2019-2020 term. This institute offers fellowships in research areas that encompass the social sciences and humanities, with each fellowship running for either a ten month or five month period.

To be eligible, candidates should not have conducted main research or employment activity in Poland for more than six months in the three years before the application due date. Short stays are not included in this restriction.

Candidates who are researchers in any stage of their careers are eligible to apply, including juniors and postdocs who obtained their PhDs in the last ten years and have some substantial working experience as researchers for at least three years prior to the application date. Senior researchers and professors who have more than ten years of full-time research experience after obtaining their PhDs may also apply.

The application process includes a formal selection process that is designed to provide a fair, equitable, and quality experience to all applicants. Applicants will first be subjected to a formal preselection process that entails the detailed revision of all required application documents. Then each application will be peer-reviewed by several independent assessors before being ranked by the International Scientific Advisory Board. This board is responsible for the final selection of the twelve successful fellows. Once a fellow has been selected, he will be notified and encouraged to sign an individual Host Agreement.

Twelve fellowships are being offered for 2019-2020, with four existing as junior positions and eight as senior positions. Applications may be submitted through the convenient online application portal. Materials must be received by October 30, 2018, with fellowships commencing in October 2019. Late applications will not be considered, so each applicant is strongly encouraged to carefully read all application requirements before submitting documentation.

Each year, the University of Oxford’s Torch Research Centre in the Humanities actively seeks proposals from qualified new researchers. The institute accepts proposals that will invite new, or develop existing partnerships in all humanities disciplines.

TORCH was launched in 2014 and allows researchers from all the humanities to collaborate with those from other disciplines, as well as individuals from other organizations and universities. The organization hosts a wide variety of far-reaching interdisciplinary projects and emphasizes the importance of broad research and intellectual risk-taking. The organization does not focus on one specific aspect of the humanities, but instead crosses divisions to create truly collaborative projects.

Proposals may involve new activities or develop current bases of knowledge. The proposal should enhance the university’s research and also benefit the external partner in some way. Most projects will continue after the duration of the fellowship has ended.

Each fellow may receive up to £12k to support a term of teaching or as a pro rata across the full academic year. This can also be paid out as hourly paid research or teaching assistance or similar projects. Individuals who are in the early stages of their careers may also apply, with a separate fellowship funding pool available. This pol awards a one-day a week staff contract at grade 7.1 (pro rata) with an additional stipend of £2000 for project expenses. All funds awarded must be spent by 31 July 2022.

Researchers will receive support throughout their projects, including assistance in negotiating research contracts, planning research, and promoting adherence to regulatory compliance.
Each applicant must be endorsed by their faculty. Early-stage applicants should receive an agreement from their senior tutors or line managers to be given release to participate in the fellowship.

All applications are due no later than October 11, 2021. Materials may be submitted online via the IRAMS web platform. Questions may be directed to ksupport@humanities.ox.ac.uk.

A call for applications has now been released for the Newton International Fellowships. This project is funded by the British Academy, Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Royal Society. These awards provide significant funding for researchers to work at a UK institution for up to two years.

The goal of the program is to promote long lasting international collaborations and teamwork between the most promising early career postdoctoral researchers. Fellowships are open to researchers from a variety of disciplines, including the natural, medical, physical, and social sciences, as well as the humanities.

To be eligible, interested applicants must be between the ending state of their PhD programs and their seventh year of active full time postdoctoral experience. They should be early career researchers working outside the United Kingdom. United Kingdom citizens will not be considered. Applicants should, however, be proficient in English and have clearly defined, purposeful research proposals with host researchers.

Fellowships are awarded for up to two years, with an annual stipend of £24,000 per year. An additional £8,000 may be awarded for research expenses, along with a £2,000 payment for relocation costs. Some selected fellows may be eligible for follow-up funding after their fellowships to continue their networking and research activities.

The Newton Fund supports additional fellowships that help develop the long-term growth and wellbeing of partner countries. This is carried out through research and networking, and provides funding for research project application in Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey.

All applications must be received by March 27, 2018, with results announced approximately six months later. Selected fellows must be prepared to begin their programs between October 1 2018 and March 31, 2019. More information can be found on the Royal Society grants management system website.
