Each year, the College of Charleston’s Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture invites qualified applicants to apply to the research fellowship program. This fellowship provides awards of up to $500 per week and, in some cases, also includes a housing allowance.

To be eligible, candidates should be engaged in projects of scholarship: art, or public history. These projects must in some way benefit from research at Charleston, with preference given to individuals attending from out of state. Candidates who intend to make use of materials from the Jewish Heritage Collection, housed at the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library, will also be given preference.

Award recipients may be from a myriad of fields, including those who are graduate students, independent scholars, senior scholars, artists, filmmakers, journalists, or even exhibition curators. The library is home to dozens of Congregational and Organizational Records, including Brith Shalom Beth Israel, Temple Sinai, the Hebrew Orphan Society, and the Southern Jewish Historical Society. The library is also home to over 400 recordings of Jewish South Carolinians, Holocaust Archives, and rabbinical records. It also houses documents such as unpublished memoirs, genealogical material, photographs, family collections, postcards, scrapbooks, business records, and more.

To apply, interested scholars should submit a cover letter explaining their specific research needs in Charleston. The length of the project should be included, as should a detailed curriculum vitae and a two-page project proposal. All materials can be sent to Shari Rabin, the director of the Center, by email at rabinsl@cofc.edu.

Candidates who wish to visit during the academic school year (September through April) should apply by August 1, while those wishing to visit during the summer months (May through August) may apply by March 1. Candidates seeking free housing should apply earlier rather than later.

Harvard University invites experts from all disciplines to apply for the Harvard University Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute’s Art Fellowship. This program is designed to allow emerging and mid-career artists throughout Southeast Asia to travel to Harvard to participate in interdisciplinary exchanges with students and faculty on global issues relevant in their home nations.

Four artists total will be selected, with two traveling to Harvard in the fall of 2018 and two in the spring. Each fellow will enjoy a two-month residency on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Visiting artists will attend events and exhibits in collaboration with various departments and faculty. Each artist will also host an open studio exhibition, in which he or she will present either a work in progress or completed project. Artists will also give talks about their practice.

Candidates should be South Asian artists who work in any medium. Eligible countries include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. Their art should relate and respond to social and political issues in the region. Individuals whose artwork relates directly to the Institutes’ current, ongoing research are especially encouraged to apply.

Project summaries should include the themes of the artist’s work and a brief description of why he or she would like to come to Harvard. A personal statement should also be provided, as should work samples of no more than 25 images, 15 pages of text, or 15 minutes of video.

Candidates must hold valid passports and be eligible to work in foreign countries. They should be emerging or mid-career artists who have had minimal opportunities to work abroad. Artists with professional backgrounds and training will receive preference. All applications must be received no later than July 2, 2018, with selected applicants notified by August 13, 2018.

The Norman Hargreaves-Mawdsley Scholarship is now open for qualified Humanities graduate students specializing in topics such as Spanish, Latin American, or European History. This scholarship is only eligible for the previously listed areas of study. Two awards will be granted to individuals studying general European History, while one will be provided to an individual studying Spanish or Latin American History.

The award is open to all postgraduate taught and research degrees, and will provide financial assistance for all course and college fees. It also provides a stipend, which is developed based on the UK Research Council rate. Course fees and living expenses will be awarded for full-time students in the amount of at least £14,553, while part-time students will receive a prorated study support grant instead.

Applicants are welcome from any country. The scholarship may be awarded as an individual award, or through partnership with the Research Council or Clarendon funding.

There is no individual application process for this award. All applicants, whether internal or external, should apply to the University of Oxford for the 2018-2019 graduate degree program. All applications should be submitted by January. Applicants will be evaluated for scholarship qualification when the team is reviewing admissions applications.

If two or more equally qualified candidates happen to be the final two in the running, the team will give priority to the candidate who has listed Wolfson as his or her first college of choice. The successful scholar will then become a member of Wolfson College. Applicants from all countries are eligible. For more information or to apply, candidates should visit the organization website at Wolfson.ox.ac.uk.

The European Union – Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation is currently seeking applicants for a six-month fellowship at their offices in Tokyo. The fellowship is designed to support the center’s mission of researching and analyzing EU-Japan economic and industrial issues. If selected as a Minerva Fellow, you will be expected to conduct research on a pre-selected topic based on the center’s priorities. Your research will culminate in a 70-100 page policy report. In addition to the research and writing of that report, you will also participate in the daily analytical activities of the center, which includes media monitoring, policy briefings, and seminar reports.

To apply for the fellowship, you must be a citizen of an EU member-state or a citizen of Japan. Citizens of COSME Third Countries may also apply. Additionally, you must be a degree-holding professional to be considered for this fellowship (sorry, students). The center is particularly interested in trade and economic analysts, academics, scientists, and civil servants. Other professionals will also be considered, but all applicants must possess a broad interest in EU-Japan cooperation, including but not limited to areas such as trade/market access, industrial policy issues, and research and development. Applicants with prior professional experience in Japan, a proven research record in one of the center’s priority topics, or Japanese language abilities will be given preference during the application review period.

The Minerva Fellowship will pay between €1,700 and €2,000 per month, and it lasts six months. Exceptional fellows may have their offer extended an additional six months after they demonstrate their abilities. The fellowship funding is intended to cover the cost of basic daily expenses and accommodation in Tokyo. Fellows from outside Japan will receive an additional travel subsidy of €1,000. The EU-Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation will help you obtain a visa, and they will also assist in your purchase of the required insurance policies (travel, health, accident, and liability).

To apply for the fellowship, you must submit your curriculum vitae/resume, a cover letter, and a research topic proposal. The research proposal must align with the center’s list of priority research topics, and can be no longer than two pages. The fellowship will last from October 2017 to March 2018, and applications are due 15 July 2017. After an initial culling of applicants, shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the center and must submit documentation proving they meet the minimum requirements for the fellowship.

The Australian Research Council invites applicants to its exclusive Australian Laureate Fellowship program. This program serves as a representation of the commitment to support excellence in research. The program is open to applicants who are researchers of international recognition.

The program hopes to drive world-class researchers to influential positions, and to incentivize them to apply their talents to areas of need in Australia. The proposal provides funding for relevant research, along with a salary stipend and related financial support.

The program supports excellent, groundbreaking research in an excellent research training environment. Fellows will be provided with top-notch mentorship in order to develop career and research skills. The program will also help fellows create networks among researchers and to enhance the overall scale and focus of research in the sciences. The overarching goal of this program is to expand Australia’s abilities in research and overall knowledge.

Seventeen fellowships will be awarded each year, awarding a salary stipend in addition to a Level E professorial salary. This professorial salary is provided by the Administering Organization. Funding will also be provided for two postdoctoral research associates (for up to five years) and two postgraduate researchers (for up to four years). Fellowship recipients will also receive up to $300,000 in project funding per year.

Project funding may be used for a variety of purposes, including: personnel, research associates and assistance, technicians, access to research facilities, technical services, field research, expert third party services, equipment and consumables, publication, technology resources, focus groups and conferences, travel costs, and web hosting. Other costs may be provided if reasonable.

The fellowship gives priority to exceptional female researchers. This is done in order to promote women in research and mentor early researchers. Preference is also given to researchers who will play a sustained leadership role in Australia’s research system.

Two Australian Laureate Fellowships will be awarded to female Australian Laureate Fellows for funding beginning in 2018. A Kathleen Fitzpatrick Australian Laureate Fellowship will be awarded specifically to a highly ranked female applicant from the realm of humanities, arts and social science disciplines.
The Google Faculty Research Awards Program is created to help develop new technologies and future leaders. It recognizes and supports high-quality faculty in the process of conducting innovative research in relevant fields. Google maintains close connections with top-ranked academic institutions while at the same time conducting their own in-house research and engineering.

Applicants may categorize their proposals into a broad Computer Science research area. These might be topics including, but certainly not limited to:

Algorithms and optimization

Cooling and power

Digital media processing

Human-computer interaction

Machine perception

Privacy and security

Recommendation settings

Each successful applicant will be assigned a Google sponsor, who will encourage the project by discussing directions, engagement, and interactions. Award recipients will be encouraged to give talks at Google discussing their research as well as to meet with relevant research groups.

The goal of this program is to build and strengthen partnerships with faculty who are working on solutions to problems that impact all those who use technology. The research awards allow for funding in the amount of $150,000 USD to support one graduate student for a full year. They are awarded as an unrestricted gift, and, though highly competitive, are highly regarded. Only 15% of applicants will receive funding, as the review process will be conducted by a Google-wide search team.

To apply for an award, applicants should read and review Google’s “How to Write a Good Proposal” document and Frequently Asked Questions, both of which can be found at research.google.com. Successful applicants often have a Google sponsor, which is not a mandatory component of the application process but can be beneficial. Having a Google employee as a sponsor helps the applicant to ensure that his or her proposal is relevant and interesting. This person should be considered an expert in the applicant’s area of research, and familiar with his or her personal work.

Applicants should submit proposals by October 7th, 2017. The application process includes an online application form and a written proposal. The proposal should consist of an overview, proposal body, data policy, and budget. A CV is also required.

Successful applicants will be notified in February 2018. Award recipients may apply for up to, but no more than, $150,000. More information can be found at research.google.com.

The Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF) has announced a fellowship opportunity for independent scholars in Europe. The fellowship is designed to fund independent-minded researchers to investigate and share original research that takes new approaches and suggests new solutions to real world social problems.

To be eligible, you must be an independent scholar in Europe. The ISRF considers an independent scholar someone who does not hold an appointment, temporary or permanent, at an institution of higher education and research. They must be engaged in intellectual work that is comparable to that of a professional academic but who may or may not be currently employed. Those who hold part-time positions in academia are eligible to apply, if they desire support for research to be conducted outside of their contracted hours. Applicants typically hold a PhD, but the fellowship is not intended for newly-minted scholars pursuing postdoctoral positions. Other academic or professional qualifications may be considered if the applicant can provide peer-reviewed publications, monographs, professional journal publications, and/or popular media publications/productions.

Applicants must provide a research proposal, and the ISRF is only interested in boundary-pushing, innovative research topics. Your research may break with traditional theories or explanations to reconsider problems in a new light. You may explore problems which do not currently possess an adequate theoretical explanation, or perhaps you will utilize a new methodology. Applicants are encouraged to submit controversial proposals which may critically challenge extant theories and understandings. Interdisciplinarity is welcomed and encouraged, and the ISRF accepts applications from all social science fields and the humanities. Your research proposal may include, but is not limited to: initiation of a project or of research-level work intended to draw upon or contribute to a profession, completion of a project, or preparation of an article or monograph for publication. Joint/group applications will not be considered.

The fellowship award is intended to provide applicants full or partial relief from academic duties for up to one year, and the award period must begin no later than December 2018. The amount of the award will vary according to the research proposal and applicant’s situation, but the maximum allowable amount is £25,000. The award amount is determined according to reasonable research, childcare, and other domestic expenses. Applicants who are chosen for the award will be required to establish an institutional affiliation, and the ISRF will take lead responsibility in negotiating the terms of that affiliation. However, the applicant will be responsible for identifying suitable institutions.

Applications are due 1 September 2017, and you will be informed of the ISRF’s decision by December 2017.

Since 2005, the William Nelson Cromwell Foundation has awarded fellowships to support research and writing in American legal history by early-career scholars. 2017 marks the twelfth year of awarding fellowships, and the application window is now open. Fellowship recipients will receive $5,000, and applicants must be what the foundation calls “early-career” scholars. That is, those who are currently writing or researching a doctoral dissertation or are recent recipients of a graduate degree who are working on their first major research project or monograph. The number of fellowships each year is ultimately at the discretion of the foundation, but in recent years, it has typically awarded between five and nine fellowships.

The Cromwell Foundation has partnered with the American Society for Legal History (ASLH) to assist in reviewing applications. Applicants will submit their materials to the ASLH, which will review the applications and submit recommendations to the Cromwell Foundation. Founded in 1930, the foundation was established with the purpose of promoting and encouraging scholarship in legal history, especially the colonial and early national periods of the United States. It has historically supported the publication of legal records and historical monographs.

There is no application form to complete, but if you are interested in applying, you will need to pull together packets of materials. The first packet must include a description of your research project, which can be no longer than six pages, double-spaced, including notes and a working title. You must also include a proposed budget and timeline, which can either be included in the project description or kept separate. Finally, the first package of application materials must include your curriculum vitae, which cannot be longer than three pages. That entire compilation of documents must then be combined into a single .pdf file and emailed to the selection committee. In the second packet of materials, you must provide two recommendation letters from academic references. Those recommendation letters must be emailed as a .pdf file directly to the committee Chair.

The deadline for applications is July 11, 2017, and fellowship recipients will be notified by early November of the foundation’s decision. A formal announcement of the awards will then be made at the annual meeting of the American Society of Legal History. To learn more about the fellowship and how to apply, click here.
