The Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s Program is designed to help develop qualified personnel with a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The program provides financial support to high-achieving scholars who are engaged in eligible masters or doctoral programs in Canada.

The program provides funding to students who are interested in developing strong research skills, allowing the scholars to focus fully on their studies in a chosen field. Each year, the program supports up to 2,500 students, spanning all disciplines and administered by Canada’s three federal granting agencies.

To be eligible, students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. They should have enrolled in, applied for, or intending to apply for full-time admission to eligible graduate programs at the master’s or doctoral level at any Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation.

Students must apply by the deadline for admission stated for the intended program of study, which will vary depending on the institution selected. By December 31, candidates must have completed between zero and twelve months of full-time studies in the program for which they are requesting funding, which can be a master’s program, a doctoral program that is being entered without any pre-enrollment or completion of a master’s program, or a combined master’s-doctoral program.

Candidates who are applying to a master’s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program without a master’s degree conferred (such as a fast-track program) or those in which a master’s program will be completed before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue to an eligible doctoral program, may also be eligible.

Candidates may also have completed between four and twelve months of full-time study in a master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award. They may not have previously held a CGS M. Scholarship support for several of these wards is limited to a maximum of four years of full-time study.

Applicants must have received a first-class average in each of the last two completed years of study, and can only submit one scholarship application per academic year. Attempted programs of study must have significant research components, consisting of original, independent research that will lead to the completion of a thesis or major research project. Projects that will culminate in dissertations, performances, recitals, exhibits, or scholarly publications may also be eligible. Clinically-oriented programs are eligible if they have significant research components.

To apply, candidates should submit applications using the Research Portal, with all applications due on December 1 before 8:00 pm Eastern Time. Applications will be evaluated by weighing academic excellence, research potential, and personal characteristics and interpersonal skills. More information may be obtained by emailing cgsma@cihr-irsc.gc.ca, schol@nserc-crsng.gc.ca, or fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

The University of Montreal has a longstanding reputation as an “international university in a city you can call home.” It is ranked in the first percentile of the world’s most prominent universities, and as a result, attracts students from almost every country in the world.

Montreal is well known for its cultural diversity, and the university is no exception. It offers education in multiple fields of study, many of which offer interdisciplinary degrees and approaches. International students are invited to apply to the University of Montreal for fall, summer or winter academic year.

The university offers many benefits to international students, including all-hours access to the Bureau des etudiants internationaux, also known as the Foreign Students Office, which helps acclimate students to Quebec and all of its related customs, requirements, features, and demands. Scholarships and funding are also available, many of which are significant in cost and can help make the price of an international education more affordable.

Each international student must obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate and study permit upon being accepted to the university. In some cases, a visitor visa is also required. These can be obtained by contacting the Canadian authorities or diplomatic mission after receiving an offer of admission. Proof of the admission offer, along with evidence of ability to pay, must be provided to this office. Acceptance certificates and study permits are not required if the academic program of study will last less than six months. Individuals wishing to stay in Quebec longer after graduation must apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit Program , which may lead to permanent residence, if desired.

While the University of Montreal is a French-speaking university, many departments are committed to providing a bilingual environment and offer graduate programs in English as well as French.

For fall and summer admission, all graduate applicants must submit applications by February 1st. For winter, all applications must be submitted by September 1st. However, some programs do offer availability after these deadlines have passed. Regardless of application deadline, all foreign students should provide at least three months to complete all permit requirements necessary to study in Canada. Moe information about application requirements may be found on the university website, at https://admission.umontreal.ca.

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research invites qualified early career researchers to join their network of over 370 researchers from 18 countries. These researchers seek answers to some of the most complex global challenges. As a result, the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program has released a call for applications.

This program provides funding, skills training, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities to scholars from diverse disciplines. It aims to create leaders and agents of change in academia, as well as in the rest of the global environment.

Scholars receive $100,000 in unrestricted research support, as well as a two-year membership to a CIFAR research program. They also have access to specialized leadership and communication skills training. These research programs connect the world’s best minds across borders and between disciplines. The goal of this program is to push researchers to move further, and to inspire young researchers to join in the push. Each program group contains a unique combination of researchers with different disciplinary perspectives and approaches to research. Participants will meet one to three times a year for five years. Funding is renewable. No relocation is necessary, as participants will remain in their home country and at their native institutions while researching, and only travel for meetings.

Applicants may be from any country, but must hold a PhD or equivalent and be within the first five years of a full-time appointment in academia. They should have been appointed no earlier than May 1, 2013. Most applicants are at an Assistant Professor level or equivalent. Postdoctoral fellows may not apply. Research interests must be aligned with the themes of an eligible CIFAR research program. These programs are: Azrieli Program in Brain, Mind & Consciousness, Bio-Inspired Solar Energy, Gravity & the Extreme Universe, Humans & the Microbiome, and Molecular Architecture of Life.

All applications should be submitted online. Three letters of reference must be included. All applications must be received no later than February 22, 2018. Questions about the program or the application process may be directed to global.scholars@cifar.ca.

The University of British Columbia is one of the world’s top forty universities. The institute invites high-ranking, competitive students to apply for its equally prestigious undergraduate programs.
Although application requirements vary depending on degree and campus of choice, all applicants must meet UBC’s general admissions requirements and English Language admission standard.

Because English is the primary language of instruction at UBC, all students must demonstrate a minimum level of English proficiency before being admitted. This may be met through nine different pathways, such as completing three or more years of full-time education in English in Canada or the United States.

Applicants who have studied at a Canadian high school, international high school, Canadian college, or international college will follow several simple procedures. They should first choose their degree of choice and campus, while at the same time ranking a second choice, just in case.

In addition to meeting the English language requirement, all students must meet prerequisite requirements for the degree of interest. In preparing their applications, students should also consider which stories and attributes they would like to share as part of their profiles. Students may share characteristics such as what is most important, what has been learned outside of school, and other ideas. The online application for the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses opens in early September and closes on January 15. The application fee must be paid upon completion of the application, and no later than January 15. Some degrees require additional fees in addition to the initial application fee.

Students wishing to live in a UBC residence must apply through the UBC Student Housing application. In order to be guaranteed housing, students must accept their offers of admission to UBC by no later than June 1.
Successful applicants will be citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Foreign citizens are also eligible to apply. Students must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has received a Vanier CGS quota. They should be pursuing (in the summer or academic year following the announcement of results) either full-time doctoral studies and research at the institution or a joint graduate program. A joint graduate program might include an MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD. Only the PhD portion of this study will be eligible for funding.

Applicants also must have not completed more than twenty months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2018. They should have achieved a top-ranking grade point average within the last two years of full-time study. Each candidate should contact his or her institution for a definition of what qualification this might necessitate.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive $50,000 per year. Students may not have held or currently hold a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Students from any region of Canada are eligible to apply. Scholarships will be awarded for a total of three years.

Students must apply by November 1, 2017. Applicants will be ranked and decisions made based on three equally weighted selection criteria that include academic ability, research ability, and leadership potential.

Finally, you may be provided an opportunity to teach in an academic program run by the institute, but this will depend on curricular needs.

To be eligible for this fellowship, you must have successfully defended and deposited your dissertation before the position begins in October 2017. Your dissertation should relate to one of the thematic areas previously discussed, and you must have earned your PhD no earlier than September 2014.

The fellowship will initially last a year from October 2017 to September 2018, and you will be provided an annual stipend of $40,500 that includes mandatory benefits. The fellowship may be renewed for a second year, following a review of your work and depending on the availability of funds. As a fellow, you will be promised office space (although it may be a shared space), library access, internet access, and computer facilities access.

To apply for the position, you must email your application packet to eurus.postdoc@carleton.ca. Your packet should include your curriculum vitae, a research plan for the duration of the fellowship (750-1,000 words), and a scholarly writing sample on a relevant topic. Lastly, you will have to provide two recommendation letters. The application materials are due August 15, 2017. For more information about the fellowship and how to apply, click here.
