The goal of the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European, and Regulatory Procedural Law is to encourage academic discussion, inquiry, and research among foreign scholars. In particular, this program is aimed at preparing and supporting young scholars as they advance their research activities.

To meet this goal, the institute provides several scholarships to foreign doctoral candidates. These awards assist scholars in financing a stay at the Institute for up to six months in 2021. To be eligible, applicants must be doctoral candidates who are conducting research within one of the Institute’s many research areas.

Applicants must be proficient in the English language, though their thesis papers may be written in languages other than English. Candidates should also be affiliated either with the Department of European and Comparative Procedural Law or the Department of International Law and Dispute Resolution.

To apply, interested candidates should submit a cover letter of one page stating their reasons for applying. They should indicate the relationship between the institute’s potential units of research and the topic of their own research. They should also provide a potential time frame for the scholarship stay in 2021.

Applicants must also submit a recent curriculum vitae that indicates the type of degree awarded. A brief summary of the PhD project, in no more than two pages, should include the desired subject and description of the research plan. Two letters of recommendation with appropriate contact details must also be supplied. One of these letters should be from the PhD supervisor.

Successful recipients will receive a scholarship in monthly installments of 1.500 €. Applicants will be granted workstations in the reading room, along with invitations to engage in regular scientific events. Recipients will also receive full access to the libraries of the Institute.

All materials must be submitted by May 31, 2020, with complete application information found on the university’s website. Questions can be directed to Viktoria Drum and Christiane Gobel at scholarship@mpi.lu.

The Linda Hall Library encourages doctoral students and other exemplary scholars to apply for the 2019-2020 fellowships. Candidates should be conducting research in the history of science and related areas. This includes topics such as science and technology studies. This fellowship provides researchers with a unique, immersive setting that inspires rich intellectual discussion and research. Fellows may also take advantage of the library’s close proximity to other research libraries and institutions.

The Linda Hall Library was founded in 1946 and is one of the leading independent science and technology libraries in the country. Its holdings document the science, technology, and engineering disciplines spanning from the 15th century to the present. Over half a million monograph volumes and over 48,000 journal titles are available in topics such as natural history, Cold Ware science, aeronautics, and more.

Each fellowship is designed to last anywhere from one week to four months. Several distinct awards are available, including Residential Fellowships and Travel Fellowships. The residential fellowships may last from one to four months and are designed for doctoral students whose work would potentially benefit from research conducted within the Library’s collections. Funding is awarded for up to $3,000 per month for doctoral students and up to $4,200 per month for postdoctoral students.

Individuals who reside within the Kansas City area may not apply for residential research fellowships. Recipients are expected to work full time on their research projects at the library, and housing is not provided. All fellows must offer a lecture or seminar to the general public while in residence, if so requested, and engage in seminars and other in-house events with other fellows.

Travel fellowships are geared toward researchers who wish to make a short, exploratory visit lasting anywhere from one to three weeks. Funding is available in the amount of $750 per week to help offset the cost of travel and living expenses in Kansas City.

To apply, candidates should complete an application packet detailing the intellectual, historic, and scientific significance of the project, as well as the importance of the Library’s’ collections to the outcomes of the research project. All application materials should be submitted no later than January 18, 2019.

“Certification for Participants” form. This is available as an external link from the application and may be submitted as an attachment. All materials must be submitted no later than January 15, 2019.
As part of their Women in the Humanities syllabus, the University of Oxford is offering a postdoctoral writing fellowship, of 3-6 months in duration, to postdoctoral scholars without a stable or full-time academic role. This interdisciplinary programme, which launched in 2013, seeks to endorse and encourage feminist study across all the humanity faculties, from history, to literature, to gender politics. The programme itself strives to provide opportunities for women working across all areas of the Humanities by fostering and supporting research into women’s lives, past and present, as well as actively tackling everyday sexism both within the University and academia as a whole.

It is open to academics who completed their doctorate studies up to three years ago and are not currently in a permanent academic role. Candidates who received their PhD before July 1st, 2015 will only be considered if they have appealing circumstances. The University stipulates that the subsidy should be used solely for the purpose of travel and living expenses, as well as any research projects that aid their doctoral work.

To apply, candidates should complete an application using a specified template. Together with this, applicants should merge their CV into one pdf document which is to be sent to: alexandra.hughes-johnson@humanities.ox.ac.uk by midday on September 10th, 2018. Please note that the University will not consider applicants who do not follow the basic instructions of the application process.

Following an application, you can expect to hear from the University by October 22nd, 2018. The University will select a Fellow who proposes work which will meaningfully and substantially further our understanding of the portrayal, experiences, and lives of women. Successful scholars are also expected to regularly take part in the programme’s activities, intellectual and extra-curricular. In return, Fellows will receive a mentor in that area of expertise, as well as promotion of their work on the Women in the Humanities website.

The prestigious Toshiba International Foundation invites qualified doctoral students to apply for its 2018 fellowships. These fellowships are funded and coordinated by the Toshiba International Foundation and the European Association for Japanese studies.

The European Association for Japanese Studies is comprised of a group of scholars and researchers who focus exclusively on Japan. Since 1973, this group has worked to promote interest and research in Japanese studies in all countries of Europe, as well as the United States and Japan. Studies are encouraged through conferences, symposia, and workshops, and these efforts aim to increase the overall membership of the European Association for Japanese studies.

The Toshiba International Foundation, on the other hand, was founded in 1989 and promotes overall understanding of Japan by funding Japanese studies and research by the world’s top universities, research institutions, and historical organizations.

All research for these fellowships will be carried out in Japan. Therefore, all applicants must be specializing in any field related to Japanese Studies at an approved European academic institution. Because the goal of the program is to encourage new academic study in Japan, applicants who have already studied in Japan (including for a high school program) will not be considered.

To apply, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a statement of three hundred words describing the project for which the applicant wishes to pursue their research. This should be a brief proposal but describe in detail the goal of the applicant’s overall research in Japan.

Each applicant must also submit a letter of support from his or her advisor or supervisor. This letter should be written on official company or university letterhead. All application materials must be received no later than May 7 2018. Fellowships will last for a total of three months and all grantees will receive an award of roughly 7,000 Euros. More information may be found at https://www.toshibafoundation.com/index.html.

Each year, the University of Illinois Foundation offers the John Rovensky Fellowship. Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2018-2019 academic year, each in the amount of $9,500. These fellowships are provided by the foundation established in honor of the late John E. Rovensky and support doctoral students who are writing their dissertations in U.S. business or economic history.

John Rovensky was the youngest ever vice president of the National Bank of Commerce and later went on to become chairman of the executive committee of the American Car and Foundry Company. He retained a profound involvement in economics and the academic profession until his death in 1970. The fellowship is the result of a gift by Mr. Rovensky to the Lincoln Educational Foundation.

These fellowships may be combined with other funding sources, such as grants or teaching positions. However, they are non-renewable. Applicants must be working toward Ph.D. degrees with U.S. business or economic history as the area of major interest. Recipients should be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited American university. Applicants who are preparing to teach or research will be given preference, as will those who have completed all graduate coursework by the fall of 2018.

A committee comprised of seven scholars in American economic and business history will make all final decisions regarding the fellowship recipients. Applicants are judged based on several criteria, including their academic ability and interest in business and economic history. This should be evidenced through a letter of recommendation from a professional who knows the candidate well. The successful applicant will also have demonstrated ability in research and writing, along with exhibiting potential for a career in teaching and academic research.

Applicants should also submit a dissertation proposal and application form at http://thebhc.org/john-e-rovensky-fellowship-application. All materials must be received no later than Friday, March 9, 2018. Winners are announced at the Business History Conference Banquet at the Baltimore Embassy Suites in Baltimore, Maryland. Questions about the application process may be submitted to mbucheli@illinois.edu.

Since 2008, the Government of Canada has offered the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program. This program was designed to strengthen the country’s ability to attract and retain high-quality doctoral students and to develop Canada’s abilities and reputation as a leader in research and education.

Vanier Scholarships develop and demonstrate strong leadership skills and scholarly aptitude throughout the duration of the program. Areas of interest include social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health.

Successful applicants will be citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Foreign citizens are also eligible to apply. Students must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has received a Vanier CGS quota. They should be pursuing (in the summer or academic year following the announcement of results) either full-time doctoral studies and research at the institution or a joint graduate program. A joint graduate program might include an MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD. Only the PhD portion of this study will be eligible for funding.

Applicants also must have not completed more than twenty months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2018. They should have achieved a top-ranking grade point average within the last two years of full-time study. Each candidate should contact his or her institution for a definition of what qualification this might necessitate.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive $50,000 per year. Students may not have held or currently hold a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Students from any region of Canada are eligible to apply. Scholarships will be awarded for a total of three years.

Students must apply by November 1, 2017. Applicants will be ranked and decisions made based on three equally weighted selection criteria that include academic ability, research ability, and leadership potential.
