The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy announces the availability of several grants to assist foreign citizens not residing in Italy, as well as Italian citizens living abroad. These awards are offered for the 2018-2019 academic year and serve to promote international cooperation, particularly in the areas of culture, science, language, and the economy. Grants may cover any financial need related to study, research, or training at Italian Higher Education Institutes.

Several types of awards are available. Grants for Master’s Degree courses are awarded for six or nine month periods, and require the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the applicant’s native country. Generally, admission to the second year is also granted as long as the applicant is making satisfactory academic progress.

Grants are also awarded for individuals interested in higher education in arts, music, and dance. These awards also fund six to nine months of study. PhD grants are awarded to students of any discipline, for six or nine months, and require that applicants submit a letter of acceptance from the relevant Italian university.

Some students may also choose to apply for the research under academic supervision program. These awards are granted to research projects that are carried out at the Italian Research Institutions, such as the Italian Research Council or the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research. Italian language and culture courses may also receive grant applications, with funding available for no longer than three months. Applicants to these programs must provide a certificate of proficiency in Italian language.

Age requirements vary. Some programs require that applicants be no older than twenty-eight years old, while others allow applicants to be up to forty years old. Applicants who are Italian Public Administration employees, as well as their first-degree relatives, may not apply.

This program provides full tuition and fees coverage, as well as a moderate monthly living allowance and health insurance. Admission to some programs requires an admissions test. Applicants should also plan to submit CVs detailing their most significant accomplishments. All materials can be submitted via the online application form. It is available at studyinitaly.esteri.it. All materials must be submitted no later than April 30, 2018 at 2 pm. Questions may be directed to dgsp-07@esteri.it.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards several grants to United States students and young professionals to study and/or conduct academic research at universities within EU Member States. Topics of study must include EU policies, EU institutes and the American-European Union agenda. Grants are available for students with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees.

Four total awards are available, for a grant period of six to nine months. The grant will last from September through June, with specific start dates negotiated directly with host institutions. Applicants may propose an area of research or study in one to three different countries. If a student is interested in studying in multiple countries, at least three months must be required in each European Union member state. The orientation date for the program will be supplied either by the Fulbright Commission or by the United States Embassy in the country of research.

To apply, students should submit a project proposal that focuses on the observation of comparative perspectives of issues of concern. These issues should be ones that involve both the United State and the European Union, such as:

internal and external security

peace-keeping

the EU and NATO

justice and home affairs

finance

trade

human rights

agricultural and environmental policies

energy

asylum

human trafficking

development

EU enlargement

Other topics may also be accepted. Proposals should relate to EU competencies and not simply Europe or countries within Europe. There should be a holistic value to the project. Successful applicants will exhibit personal, academic, and creative excellence, along with a strong research rationale and plan. They will be strong leaders and clearly indicate how their studies will benefit American-European Union relationships during and after their grant periods.

Applicants should be proficient in the language of their chosen country, though this is not a mandatory component of the application process. TO apply and for more information, students should visit http://www.fulbrightschuman.eu.

The Institute for Comparative Federalism of Eurac Research, the Faculty of Law and the School of Political Science and Sociology of the University of Innsbruck announces a new common cross-border project. This program, called The Winter School on Federalism and Governance, was initially created in 2010, but has undergone multiple revisions. It takes place under the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

This school analyzes the interaction of federalism, regionalism, and multilevel governance from both political and legal perspectives. Each edition of the program allows students to focus on specific topics from the detailed approach of scholars, practitioners, and political scientists.

Students will examine the success and risk factors of multilevel governance systems through a wide range of case studies regarding the European Union, multinational states, and Eastern Europe. Students will study different policy fields such as financial relations and environmental policies.

The Institute for Comparative Federalism conducts comparative legal studies and applied research on governance in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. It is a component of Eurac Research, which conducts innovative research and training in Italy.

The next edition of the Winter School will be held from February 5th to 16th, 2018, and focuses on federalism in the making. It will be held in Innsbruck Austria, and Bolzano, Italy. Innsbruck is well known for Alpine scenery and architectural heritage. Students will enjoy a bustling university town and many winter sports. Bolzano is rich in culture and heritage, as well as architecture. Students will spend the two weeks of the winter school in lectures and discussion sessions, workshops, and study visits. They will be given multiple opportunities for discussion with leading experts on multilevel governance.

All international students, whether young researchers, academics, post-doctoral and post-graduate students, or civil servants, are invited to apply. Applicants are accepted from August until October 26, 2017. Scholarships are available for qualified students. Students must attend both weeks of the program. Students can obtain more information by contacting the Winter School organizers at +39 0471 055 239 or winterschool@eurac.edu.

The European University Institute (EUI) shares an established global program fellowship opportunity for qualified applicants. The Max Weber Programme (MWP) is the largest and most innovative postdoctoral experience in historical and social sciences. Applicants frequently cite political and social sciences economics, law, and history as their areas of interest. Although the program is housed at the European University Institute, it is not exclusive to European Union citizens.

Applicants must be within five years of completing their PhD and can reside anywhere in the world. The program will be held at a global institution in Italy. Faculty and researchers within the program hail from a wide range of European countries, from Portugal to Russia, as well as beyond. The program attracts candidates from as far as North and Latin America, Asia, and the Antipodes. Despite this highly beneficial and diverse mix, however, it is important to note that the native language of the program is English.

The program is highly selective and attracts over 1200 applicants each year for approximately sixty fellowships. The Max Weber Programme awards fellowships ranging from one to three years depending on the department. Successful recipients are awarded a grant of 2000 euros per month plus a family allowance if appropriate. Fellows also enjoy exclusive access to the research facilities of the European University Institute. These include an exceptional library, shared workspaces, and a personal fund of 1000 euros for independent research.

The program helps postdoctoral students become fully integrated members of an outstanding global academic community. Fellows are provided training in publishing, teaching, presenting, and grant applications. As a result, most Max Weber Fellows immediately secure an academic position in top-ranked institutions upon completing the program.

To apply for the 2018-2019 academic year, students should submit applications and required materials by October 25, 2017. They should submit an application form, CV with a list of publications, academic career statement, research proposal, and letters of reference. Questions about the application process or program may be directed to the Academic Service office at the European University Institute at applyfellow@eui.eu or +39 055 4685 377.

As a PhD student, you will be taught by distinguished professors and renowned guest lecturers from major international universities. You will also get to take part in an active research community and participate in seminars and workshops hosted by scholars with international reputations.

The doctoral program is structured into three curricula and completed in three years. The three curricula are: 1) multisectoral and computational methods of analysis for economic policy; 2) mathematical and statistical methods for economic policy; and 3) network analysis and online data mining methods for economic policy. In your first year of courses, you will participate in seminars and exams that are common to all three curricula. A strong emphasis is placed on methods, applications to different economic policy context, and the replication of well-known economic policy analyses. You begin with tutorials on data analysis and visualization with R; an introduction to Stata; and how to program using Matlab. In your second and third years, you will conduct research activity with the purpose of completing your PhD thesis. During that time, you will be given an opportunity to study at international universities.

The application can be completed online in Italian or English, and the deadline is August 22, 2017. To learn more about the program and how to apply, click here.

Villa I Tatti (Harvard’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) is accepting applications for two graduate fellowships. One fellowship will be for the fall semester (September through December), and the other will be for the spring semester (January through June). The graduate fellowship is designed to grant students who are working on their dissertation or picking their research topic(s) the chance to read extensively in Renaissance sources and secondary literature and examine objects relevant to their studies.

I Tatti’s fellowship affords graduate students the time they need to pursue their research with as few obligations and interruptions as possible while providing access to a trove of scholarly resources. Fellows will live in Florence, Italy and are expected to spend at least three days a week at the center. I Tatti is home to the Berenson Library, which offers one-of-a-kind collections for Italian Renaissance scholars. The Berenson Library is also part of the Harvard library system, which means fellows will have access to online journals and all other electronic resources they have come to expect from academic libraries.

The center regularly hosts stimulating scholarly talks, and as a fellow, you are granted access to these dynamic, engaging encounters. Such events include exploratory seminars, workshops, tours of exhibitions and cultural institutions, conferences, lectures, and even concerts.

You must meet certain criteria to be eligible to apply:

First, you must be a current doctoral student enrolled at Harvard University.

Second, you must possess an interest in the Italian Renaissance, which the center defines as the period between the 14th and 17th centuries and the geographic area including Italy and its transnational dialogues (i.e., Latin American, Mediterranean, African, Asian, etc.).

However, applications will also be accepted from students who are exploring the impact of the Renaissance on the modern era. All disciplines supported by the center are eligible for the fellowship, including the arts, history, philosophy, literature, music, and history of science. Finally, you must be familiar with Italian, but fluency is not required.

The stipend for the fellowships is $12,000 for fall fellows and $18,000 for spring fellows. There is also a one-time supplement for relocation expenses (maximum $1,500). Housing is not provided, but each fellow does get their own library carrel and desk. In addition, fellows are prohibited from taking on any obligations outside of I Tatti during the fellowship period.

To apply, you will need a nomination letter from your doctoral advisor. To learn more about the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, the fellowship, and how to apply, click here.
