Each year, Harvard University aims to attract and support rising young talent. Junior Scholars often find it difficult to gain access to prestigious universities, usually after they have just received their doctorates. They suffer from limited funding and issues related to curriculum development, which makes it tough to gain leverage in their academic careers.

As a result, the university offers an exceptional opportunity to provide funding to these individuals to carry out their research at Harvard University. The grants address scholars who have recently received their doctorate degrees, allowing them to strengthen their connections with others in the field and to promote the connection between their home universities and Harvard. These fellowships also allow these candidates to gain additional or new skills in their field.

The program is designed for candidates who have recently received their Ph.D. with honors, with most fields of study accepted for the program. Candidates who have backgrounds in sciences, law, humanities, public health, medicine, economy, political science, sociology, engineering, education, architecture, or any other field of study available at Harvard are eligible to apply.

To be eligible, individuals must have completed their Ph.D. at any of the RCC member universities between May 1, 2019, and April 30, 2020, and have graduated with the highest academic distinction. They should provide an admission letter from the Harvard University department, research center, or school stating that they are supporting the applicant’s research project and/or sponsoring their J-1 Visa. They should provide a valid TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 100 points.

To apply, candidates should visit the Harvard University website and fill out and submit the online application form. They will need to provide a certificate of having been granting a PhD, along with certificate of having enjoyed an Autonomous Community PhD program, FPU, FPI, or University PhD program scholarship. A detailed curriculum vitae and copy of an admission letter from the Harvard research center, school, or department supporting the research project should also be supplied.

Finally, a detailed research proposal for the project that will be carried out during the tenure at Harvard, in more than ten pages, must also be supplied. All materials are due no later than June 30, at 11:59 p.m.

The UEFA, or the Union of European Football Associates, contains fifty-five members associations seeking to develop their own research activities and projects in the analysis of European football. The organization’s research grant program was designed to support the work of qualified researchers who are either studying for or currently hold a PhD and are interested in analyzing European football.

Within the last few years, the UEFA has attempted to engage with the academic community by offering a series of initiatives to benefit both UEFA and European football. Their efforts comprise three pillars, including research, personal development, and change. The research pillar is designated to support projects directly addressing issues within European football. It is also designed to commission academic experts and centers to conduct specific, goal-oriented studies on behalf of UEFA.

To apply, all applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a representative of a UEFA member association that supports the research being proposed. This letter is designed to ensure that all projects are developed for and in conjunction with the national associations. Projects will also have the highest practical value possible.

In an effort to boost cooperation between member associations and European universities, the UEFA also allows three or fewer researchers to submit joint applications. These researchers should be based in the territories of three different national associations.

Each individual project is eligible for a grant of up to €15,000, and each joint project is eligible for up to €20,000. This funding lasts for up to nine months of research. Proposals may be submitted in Economics, History, Law, Management, Medical science, Political science, and Sociology.

Applications must be received by March 31, 2018. Questions about the program may be directed to universities@uefa.ch.

Dartmouth College is accepting applications for its Junior Fellows program. Junior Fellowships are designed to support the academic careers of freshly-minted Ph.D. scholars. The fellowship allows them three years to pursue their research agenda while benefitting from mentors and gaining experience as teachers and department members. Applicants should be ready to start their next post-doctoral project, and they will be accepted from various fields, including humanities, social sciences, interdisciplinary programs, sciences, engineering, business, and medicine.

The responsibilities and benefits of Junior Fellows are quite extensive. Fellows will be expected to participate in the Junior Fellow Society, which includes presenting their research and scholarship. Fellows will also be appointed as non-tenure-track Lecturers in a department/program wherein they will teach two courses for the duration of the three-year fellowship, but they will not be asked to teach basic language courses. They will also receive teacher training through the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL). Fellows will be kept in residence for the fall, winter, and spring terms, but off-campus research leave is permitted in rare cases. Fellows will have access to college resources such as the school’s library and computing center, but they will not control dedicated laboratory or studio space.

The fellowship typically lasts 34 months, beginning September 1 and ending June 30 of the final year. The monthly stipend is $4,600 plus benefits along with $5,000 each year to support computing, travel, and research needs. The Society of Junior Fellows coordinates with departments to provide appropriate office space and other research needs, but such resources are ultimately at the discretion of each department.

To apply for the 2018-2021 class of Junior Fellows, you must have completed your Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2016 and have your degree in hand by June 30, 2018. Applications can be completed online, and they must be submitted by 18 September 2017. The applications should identify at least one Dartmouth faculty member whose research is relevant to your own, and the application pack must include: a cover sheet, a personal statement (1,500-word limit), a statement answering the question “After reviewing your opportunities at Dartmouth, what can Dartmouth do for you and what do you think will be the most productive aspect of your interactions with Dartmouth faculty and students?” (500-word limit), a statement outlining your scholarly agenda (500-word limit), a curriculum vitae, three recommendation letters, and academic transcripts.

The laboratory of Dr. Stephen Graham at the University of Cambridge seeks applicants for a three-year PhD studentship in the Department of Pathology, beginning January 2018. The successful candidate will join Dr. Graham’s research team as it investigates how viruses modify cellular membranes during infection. The team’s prior work has already identified several new interactions between herpesvirus proteins and cellular factors that affect host-cell membrane composition and the movement of cellular membrane proteins. The new project seeks to define the molecular basis of these interactions and how they contribute to virus infection. As a member of the research team, you will help combine structural, biochemical, and cell biology techniques, including: atomic-resolution structures of the herpesvirus proteins alone and in complexes with their cellular partners, biophysics to define the molecular details of such protein:protein interactions, fluorescence microscopy to localize these complexes within cells, and production of recombinant viruses to the function of these proteins during virus infection. As a successful candidate, you will join a multidisciplinary research team that is striving to provide foundational science for a new generation of therapeutic agents.

Applicants should possess a first or upper second class degree in biochemistry, cell biology, or biological/medical science. Additionally, they must possess outstanding written and oral communication skills. You must be a highly motivated individual capable of working with a team. Funding for the position will cover the student’s university fees and provide a stipend at the current Research Council rate. Applicants must be UK nationals or EU students who meet UK residency requirements. Additionally, by the time you are interviewed, you must have demonstrated competency in the English language.

Applications are due 26 July 2017.

The Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin is one of the most significant centers for biomedical research in the world, ranked by Thompson Reuters in the top twenty best research institutes for molecular biology and genetics. Since 1992, the MDC has dedicated itself to translating scientific advancements into applications which can prevent, diagnose, and treat human diseases. Students who want to further their studies in molecular medicine can benefit from the center’s decades of expertise by applying to its international doctoral program.

MDC’s International PhD Program provides structured training for doctoral researchers in various areas of biomedical science, including cardiovascular and metabolic research; cancer biology and immunology; neuroscience; developmental biology; and medical systems biology and bioinformatics. Other areas of research include structural biology, imaging, and biophysics. Doctoral researchers will join a group of more than 350 other PhD students at the center, all exploring cutting-edge scientific research in their field of inquiry. Approximately 40% of MDC’s PhD students are from countries outside Germany, meaning enrollees benefit from an international community of like-minded scientists.

Doctoral students are supported in their studies by the MDC in various ways. Students are offered annual committee meetings to help ensure that they are on track for successful completion of their studies. They also benefit from various lectures and seminars, methods courses, transferable skills courses, and career workshops intended to prepare researchers for an international career in science. Doctoral researchers are fully funded for three years, and contracts are often extended for an additional year. All students are expected to complete their research and thesis in four years. The MDC offers competitive salaries for its PhD researchers, and it charges no tuition.

Additionally, doctoral students can enroll in exchange programs or a specialized research school. For example, MDC students can study systems biology at New York University or myology at schools in Paris. Other partners include various institutions in Israel for the study of cell signaling and gene regulation and the University of Arizona in the United States for translational cardiovascular and metabolic medicine. Across all these campuses and areas, students join world-class researchers to tackle important biomedical questions.

The MDC stimulates students not only intellectually, but culturally, as well. The center is located in Berlin – Germany’s largest city and capital. Not only is the city home to historic landmarks and cultural attractions, it also possesses a dynamic scene of pubs, clubs, restaurants, and cafes. Berlin offers its residents a truly cosmopolitan lifestyle where cityscapes are interspersed with large, vibrant green spaces and a multicultural, multinational populace.

An application for the MDC’s International PhD program can be completed online, and you will be required to provide information about your education and training, a motivation letter, and two references. If you are accepted into the program, you will then be invited to Berlin for an interview at the MDC.
