Empa Materials Science and Technology has a released a second call for applications, starting June 1st and running until August 31st. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply immediately for the best opportunity to receive one of these exemplary postdoctoral fellowships.

These fellowships are designed to serve as career boosters for candidates seeking to experience international research and living at the highest possible standards. Empa, which is an individual-driven research and career-developing fellowship, follows a bottom-up approach and frequently integrates international researchers to enhance their vision. This program is designed for experienced researchers from all over the globe and allows them to conduct two years of full time employment and research with Empa.

Successful candidates will receive the opportunity to work on their own research ideas at one of thirty Empa research laboratories. A variety of research areas are currently accepting applications, including Energy, Natural Resources and Pollutants, Nanostructured Materials, Sustainable Built Environment, and Health and Performance. Research in these fields can be carried out in Zurich, Thun, or St. Gallen, depending on the location of the lab, but fellows have the freedom to choose their own topics and destinations of research.

Applicants must be experienced researchers and not have finished their PhDs more than six years prior. They should not have carried out their main work or academic studies in Switzerland for more than twelve months in the last three years (prior to the application deadline). The researcher should be from the EU-27 or associated countries, but have been actively researching in a third country for at least three years and within the year prior to the application deadline.

The fellowship will provide a competitive living allowance and research cost reimbursement. A mobility package, along with a small salary, are also provided. This is dependent on experience and overall program performance.
Applications must be submitted in conjunction with a mentor, based at Empa. Only one proposal per researcher may be submitted. Applications should be sent to Dr. Juliane Sauer at postdocs@empa.ch and should include a CV and proposed topic and mentor. The program will last from 2017 until 2022, with calls for applications being released every June until 2019. Materials must be submitted by August 31st, with eligible candidates now beginning work on March 1 2019.

Each year, the Project on Managing the Atom offers several fellowships for pre-doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. These awards are also available to mid-career professionals who are interested in researching topics of interest for up to one year with the possibility of renewal. Sample topics include nuclear nonproliferation policy, nuclear weapons strategy, disarmament processes and verification, the future of nuclear energy, regional conflict and nuclear weapons, security for nuclear weapons, arms control, and other items related to nuclear policy

Fellowships are designed for individuals who have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, including current university faculty members. Candidates will work in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. The program allows fellows to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, blending technical concerns and policy as they interact with an experienced cohort of faculty, senior fellows, and visiting policy makers.

Although fellows with any experience in research on nuclear policy may apply, fellows who intend to research the following topics will be given preferential consideration: reducing the risk of nuclear or radiological terrorism; stopping the spread of nuclear weapons; reducing the dangers of existing nuclear stockpiles through arms control or other means; and lowering safety, security, proliferation, and other risks associated with the growth of civilian nuclear power. Researchers should submit proposals highlighting their intended areas of research.

At the end of the fellowship, all fellows must supply a substantial piece of work that was completed during the fellowship period. Research will be presented at a public seminar one or more times throughout the fellowship period, and other seminars must be attended as well. Fellows must also participate in MTA activities, such as meetings, and regularly correspond with staff and senior faculty about research progress.

Fellows will receive ten month stipends of $39,600 (for pre-doctoral fellows) and $50,000 (for postdoctoral fellows). Applicants may apply for other sources of funding. Stipends also include health insurance and transportation passes, along with shared office space and administrative support.

To apply, candidates should submit a three to five page proposal, copies of CVs or resumes, an unofficial transcript, a writing sample, and contact information for three professional references. All interested candidates must apply no later than January 16, 2018, with recommendations due by February 1, 2018. Selected recipients will be notified by March 31, 2018.

Applicants must be under the age of thirty-five for Ph.D. study, and forty for post-doctoral research. They should be attached to a research or academic institution in science and technology and possess the required academic and professional background. Within the application, they must demonstrate that the research proposed has scientist and technological relevance. They must also have proficiency in the language at the institution of study.

PhD candidates must secure admission at a university listed in the Times Higher Education Supplement. Priority is given to students enrolled at universities that have completed a cooperation agreement with the IDB. These institutions include the University of Cambridge, University of Nottingham, University College London and Imperial College London in the UK, Princeton University in the United States, and KAUST in Saudi Arabia. Successful candidates for post-doctoral research are encouraged to complete their research projects at the Research Centres of Excellence.

The scholarship provides all academic and living allowances, health insurance, round trip airfare to and from the place of study, conference participation fees, and scientific paper preparation allowances. The program is offered every year.

To apply, students should complete the application form for 3-year Ph.D. study or post-doctoral research. It should be submitted through nominating institutions to the Office of the IDB Governor for the country. For more information, applicants should visit www.isdb.org.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards several grants to United States students and young professionals to study and/or conduct academic research at universities within EU Member States. Topics of study must include EU policies, EU institutes and the American-European Union agenda. Grants are available for students with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees.

Four total awards are available, for a grant period of six to nine months. The grant will last from September through June, with specific start dates negotiated directly with host institutions. Applicants may propose an area of research or study in one to three different countries. If a student is interested in studying in multiple countries, at least three months must be required in each European Union member state. The orientation date for the program will be supplied either by the Fulbright Commission or by the United States Embassy in the country of research.

To apply, students should submit a project proposal that focuses on the observation of comparative perspectives of issues of concern. These issues should be ones that involve both the United State and the European Union, such as:

internal and external security

peace-keeping

the EU and NATO

justice and home affairs

finance

trade

human rights

agricultural and environmental policies

energy

asylum

human trafficking

development

EU enlargement

Other topics may also be accepted. Proposals should relate to EU competencies and not simply Europe or countries within Europe. There should be a holistic value to the project. Successful applicants will exhibit personal, academic, and creative excellence, along with a strong research rationale and plan. They will be strong leaders and clearly indicate how their studies will benefit American-European Union relationships during and after their grant periods.

Applicants should be proficient in the language of their chosen country, though this is not a mandatory component of the application process. TO apply and for more information, students should visit http://www.fulbrightschuman.eu.
