As the United States begins to undergo a major demographic shift, individuals of Latino origin are becoming the largest ethnic group in the nation. Addressing this shift, the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership now offers the U.S. Latino Leadership Fellowship. This fellowship is a life-altering opportunity for practitioners, activists, and scholars who are interested in addressing disparities in their communities.

Candidates may be working to inspire change regarding education, health care, immigration, entrepreneurship, public policy, or any other field. U.S. Latino Leadership fellows are powerful leaders who are able to build cross-sector partnerships and to inspire new ideas and change through these active collaborations.

The fellowship provides selected candidates with full tuition scholarships and health fees for up to two years. Fellows may also apply for a living stipend of up to $25,000, depending on the nature of their pogroms of study. Each applicant will be evaluated based on their potential to reduce disparity in underserved American communities, as well as their overall academic ability.

All admitted degree program students at Harvard Kennedy School are eligible to apply for this award. Applicants who belong to traditionally underrepresented groups and are interested in education, business, public health, medicine, government, and law are especially encouraged to apply. Award decisions will be made based on academic merit and financial need.

In return, fellows are expected to participate in a yearlong co-curricular program. This program is designed to inspire fellows and to provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, and leadership skill-building. Participants will engage in dinner seminars, retreats, field experiences, workshops, and lectures, all of which are designed to promote ethical decision making and negotiation.

To apply, candidates should submit a biographical profile of 150 words or less. This profile should address the degree the candidate is attending to pursue at Harvard, as well as any relevant academic information. It should also detail the candidate’s work and professional experiences, personal interests, leadership experiences, and academic highlights. This should be written in the third person.

Applicants should also submit a single document containing written responses to two essay prompts. In the first, the candidate should discuss a topic of interest as it pertains to reducing disparities in Latino communities, as well as the applicant’s experience related to this topic. The second should discuss the candidate’s interest in the fellowship and how his or her leadership goals have inspired him or her to apply.

All application materials to Harvard University are due by December 3, 2018. Materials for the fellowship application must be completed and submitted by early February, with interviews taking place in early March. Decisions will be made shortly thereafter.

Fellows must also participate in MTA activities, such as meetings, and regularly correspond with staff and senior faculty about research progress.

Fellows will receive ten month stipends of $39,600 (for pre-doctoral fellows) and $50,000 (for postdoctoral fellows). Applicants may apply for other sources of funding. Stipends also include health insurance and transportation passes, along with shared office space and administrative support.

The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government invites students to apply for the annual Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. This award honors investigative reporting that promotes ethical and effective conduct of government, along with the creation of public policy.

The lucky recipient of the award will receive $25,000, while five finalists will receive $10,000. The subject matter may relate to foreign policy, but the successful application must have an impact on public policy in the United States as well. The issue addressed in the proposal and project should be something that impacts the individual or team on a local, regional, statewide, or national level.

These awards are funded by annual grants from the Goldsmith Fund of the Greenfield Foundation. Applications for the 2018 prize are now being accepted, with a deadline for all submissions set at December 29, 2017. To apply, students should submit an application that includes contract and application details, along with a detailed submission of work. This submission should include the news organization, title of investigative work, additional involved news organizations, a one-sentence summary of the entry, and a description of the actual or potential impact of entry.

Applicants should also include brief essays addressing questions related to the “story” behind the investigation. Although the award is designed for individual professionals, entries from small and mid-size publications (as well as comparable broadcast/online outlets) are welcomed. Entries may consist of a series of articles on a particular topic, but the submission should be limited to no more than ten installments. No more than four authors should be credited per team.

Materials should be submitted as a link-friendly URL and print-friendly PDF. All questions (and applications, if desired) should be submitted to Tim Bailey at tim_bailey@hks.harvard.edu.

Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government is a world leader in political science scholarship and instruction. Their Program on Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is currently seeking fellowship applicants for the 2018-2019 academic year. The fellowship does not typically include a stipend, but those who are accepted can submit a separate funding request through the program to support their research. That is to say, purely being a fellow does not guarantee funding, but you can apply for research funding once you are admitted into the program.

The STS program is seeking applicants for both pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. The pre-doctoral fellowship is best-suited for aspiring scholars who have passed their qualifying exams and are embarking on their dissertation research and writing. Postdoctoral fellowships are for those who recently earned their Ph.D. and are pursuing research that could benefit from STS methods and theories.

The benefits for STS fellows are myriad. First, your work will be furthered through a collegial, scholarly environment, and you will receive intense training in STS, ultimately becoming part of Cambridge’s STS community. You will not only learn from faculty within the program, but also other fellows, as you meet weekly to discuss each other’s research and participate in a weekly STS Circle seminar. Additionally, you will be given the opportunity to audit Harvard graduate courses and participate in the STS Program’s various events. Finally, you will study and learn in an international environment, for past fellows have hailed from the United States, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, and Europe.

If admitted into the program, the fellowship will last one academic year, with a maximum possible stay lasting two years. However, for exceptional circumstances, arrangements can be made for a shorter visit of one semester (about three months).

Applicants will be admitted based on their fit with the Kennedy School’s STS program, intellectual strengths, and research focus. Your application should therefore clearly address how you and your research project will complement the existing work being done at the school. The application deadline for academic year 2018-2019 is January 31, 2018. To apply, you must provide a description of your research interests and reasons for applying to the program (750-word maximum), your curriculum vitae or resume (two-page maximum), and a recommendation letter from an academic advisor. For applicants who wish to go the extra mile, you may also submit a second recommendation letter from a faculty member trained in STS.
