The fellowship addresses the way in which our planet is connected by electromagnetic waves fiber optic cables, and other technological connections. The pervasiveness of technology is evident in every area, and Digital Earth recognizes the materiality of the digital world we live in. This fellowship invites divergent artists to explore and respond to the material and immaterial states of our technological world. Artists will be funded based on the cost of living in the country in which they plan to work. Each candidate will also receive exclusive access to research and production infrastructure, including theory and practice courses, creative outposts, and a network of researchers.

Fellows are expected to interact with both their mentors and other fellows in Google Hangouts sessions. The goal of this project is to inspire an exchange between artists of all kinds regarding the state of our digital world. All artists’ final work will be showcased in a roaming exhibition in either 2019 or 2020.

Applicants do not need to be citizens of Asian or African countries, but their work must be based in one of those nations Applications will be judged based on the overall quality of the research proposal, along with the visual and reflective skills of the candidate.

The European Union – Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation is currently seeking applicants for a six-month fellowship at their offices in Tokyo. The fellowship is designed to support the center’s mission of researching and analyzing EU-Japan economic and industrial issues. If selected as a Minerva Fellow, you will be expected to conduct research on a pre-selected topic based on the center’s priorities. Your research will culminate in a 70-100 page policy report. In addition to the research and writing of that report, you will also participate in the daily analytical activities of the center, which includes media monitoring, policy briefings, and seminar reports.

To apply for the fellowship, you must be a citizen of an EU member-state or a citizen of Japan. Citizens of COSME Third Countries may also apply. Additionally, you must be a degree-holding professional to be considered for this fellowship (sorry, students). The center is particularly interested in trade and economic analysts, academics, scientists, and civil servants. Other professionals will also be considered, but all applicants must possess a broad interest in EU-Japan cooperation, including but not limited to areas such as trade/market access, industrial policy issues, and research and development. Applicants with prior professional experience in Japan, a proven research record in one of the center’s priority topics, or Japanese language abilities will be given preference during the application review period.

The Minerva Fellowship will pay between €1,700 and €2,000 per month, and it lasts six months. Exceptional fellows may have their offer extended an additional six months after they demonstrate their abilities. The fellowship funding is intended to cover the cost of basic daily expenses and accommodation in Tokyo. Fellows from outside Japan will receive an additional travel subsidy of €1,000. The EU-Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation will help you obtain a visa, and they will also assist in your purchase of the required insurance policies (travel, health, accident, and liability).

To apply for the fellowship, you must submit your curriculum vitae/resume, a cover letter, and a research topic proposal. The research proposal must align with the center’s list of priority research topics, and can be no longer than two pages. The fellowship will last from October 2017 to March 2018, and applications are due 15 July 2017. After an initial culling of applicants, shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the center and must submit documentation proving they meet the minimum requirements for the fellowship.
