Flintridge Preparatory School invites qualified high school students to apply for admission for the 2019-2020 academic year. This year’s open house is scheduled for Sunday, December 2, and all interested candidates are encouraged to attend.

The admissions process generally begins the year before the applicant’s desired year of enrollment. Applicants should complete applications, submit teacher recommendations and transcripts, and take the Independent School Entrance Exam. Most candidates will also engage in an interview.

Online applications are available starting in September. These can be accessed via the portal, where recommendations and other supplemental forms can also be requested and received. A non-refundable application fee of $100 is due upon submission of the application, although fee waivers are available for select students.

Recommendations are required from the student’s current English and mathematics teachers. Online recommendations can be accessed from the application portal, where paper forms may also be downloaded. Transcripts can also be requested from the application portal. Grades form the current semester, as well as those from the previous school year, are required.

The Independent School Entrance Exam is designed to give the admissions team a more well-rounded look at each applicant. This test can be taken at any convenient location and scores can be sent automatically to Flintridge by using the test code 052375.

Interviews are conducted with all students who have filed applications. Appointments are scheduled after applications have been received, and may also include a parent-interviewer meeting to ask more in-depth questions. Shadow visits are available for students interested in visiting campus on a weekday morning and attending classes with a current student.

Financial aid is available online as well, with all application materials due no later than Monday, January 28, 2019. Copies of federal and state tax returns are required and must be mailed by Friday, February 8. Financial aid is considered a separate entity from admission to Flintridge.
Admissions notifications ware sent in late December and January. Questions can be directed to admissions@flintridgeprpe.org.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) encourages talented international students to apply to its exemplary programs. International students are considered as such if they are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time they are submitted applications. U.S. applicants studying abroad are considered U.S. citizens despite their current countries of residence.

Applications are accepted from students who have completed the appropriate curriculum that is required by their home countries. This might include the Cambridge Pre-U, AP, IB, IGCSE, or A Level curricula. The most competitive applicants will have completed three A Level exams (including the physics exam) or the IB curriculum with scores of 6 or 7 on their final examinations.

This curriculum will include four years of math and one year of physics, along with a year of chemistry and three years of English (four is preferred). Each candidate should also have a year of U.S. history or government, although this requirement is frequently waived for students who studied outside of the United States. Each student will be required to take a placement test upon enrolling at Caltech as well.

First-year applicants should submit the Common Application or the Coalition Application, both with the appropriate Caltech Questions. A $75 application fee or requested fee waiver are also required, as are standardized tests, teacher evaluations, and a secondary school report. Academic transcripts and TOEFL scores, along with an International Financial Aid Statement of Intent, should also be supplied.

For applicants considering Early Action versus Regular Decision application time slots, Early Action allows candidates to apply to as many other schools as they would like. However, financial aid is not offered to international citizens under Early Action. Caltech does not offer merit-based scholarships or financial need, and instead meet 100% of all demonstrated financial need by candidates deemed eligible.

All Early Action applications are due no later than November 1, with decisions made in Mid-December. Regular Decision applications are due by January 3, with decisions made in mid-March. Students must make their enrollment decisions no later than May 1. Early Action applicants who are denied may not reapply during Regular Decision, but if they are deferred, they may choose to be reconsidered during Regular Decision.

The Polytechnic School, located in Pasadena, California, offers exemplary and well-rounded education to K-12 students from all around the country. Each year, the school admits no fewer than 18 and no more than 20 students to grade 6 and ten to twelve students for grade 7. While no students may be admitted in grade 8, 10, 11, or 12, up to thirty students may be admitted to grade 9.

The application process does not differ significantly depending on the grade level. Applications to “non-entry” grades may only be considered if space is available through the process of attrition. Application materials can be found, completed, and submitted online. Applications for the 2019-2020 school year open in October 2018.

Families are encouraged to submit materials early, as the Admissions Office will process applications as they come in. In order to do so, all application materials must be submitted no later than the listed deadline.

All applicants must submit a formal online application, including a $100 application fee, by January 2019. Fee waivers are available for students who qualify by contacting the director of financial aid. Teacher and administrator recommendations should also be submitted, ideally by current math and English teachers, as well as from one school administrator (such as a principal or counselor). Invited referees will be sent secure links to complete confidential recommendations. Recommendations must be submitted by February of the application year.

Applicants should also take the Independent School Entrance Exam. Students should take the exam only once during the application season, with the last available test date being January 2019. Visits to the school are also required as part of the admissions process. This allows the admissions team to get a better look at the child on a personal level. Students entering grades 6-7 do not receive individual interviews but instead are encouraged to visit.

Transcripts must also be supplied from the previous school year, as well as first semester reports for that application year. A student statement addressing the applicant’s backgrounds, experiences, and interests should be supplied, with parents given the option of competing a parent statement to provide additional input on their sons or daughters. These supplemental materials are also due by February 2019.

Each year, the DaVinci Camp Summer Institute invites talented, motivated middle and high school students to partake in an integrated art and applied sciences program. The camp combines mathematics, engineering, science, and art instruction in a hybrid program that embodies Leonardo da Vinci’s original concepts of a Renaissance scholar.

Students will engage in three-week, all-day sessions that combine hands-on workshops and other activities. This fast-paced environment allows students to thrive academically creatively, and analytically with other students who share their passions. Students are able to engage in life on a prestigious college campus and interact with alumni from Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech, all of whom lead the program. Sessions are offered at all four campuses.

Students will have fun and learn how to have fun learning in this program, exercising their imaginations and talents as they work to understand complex math and science problems. Activities include visits to NASA JPL, learning at the Getty Research Institute, and attending performances by the San Francisco Ballet and Opera or Los Angeles Philharmonic. Students will hike at the Inyo National Forest, or learn Brazilian batucada, among a myriad of other activities.

Session One lasts from June 9 until June 28. Session Two runs from June 23 until July 13. Session Three begins on July 5 and ends on July 24. Session Four begins on July 27 and ends on August 15.

Tuition includes instruction, course materials, field trips, and snacks. Other meals and transportation are not included. Tuition is $3,000 per session, with partial need-based financial aid available for qualified students.

To apply, interested candidates must submit a General Application along with a nonrefundable application fee of $50. Admissions are on a rolling basis, with those applying early receiving top preference. Students must submit supplemental questionnaires and a video essay to the panel, as well as a need-based application form, if desired. Questions may be directed to ContactUs@davinci-camp.com.

The University of Southern California invites qualified undergraduate applicants to apply for fall admission to its programs.

Each application will be carefully reviewed. The admissions team will take into consideration personal circumstances, special achievements, academic performance and rigor, writing skills, standardized test scores, extracurricular participation, leadership involvement, and community services. No specific curriculum is required, although it is expected that students have completed the most rigorous curriculum available in English, math, science, foreign language, social studies, and the arts. Students should also demonstrate some preparation for their intended academic majors, along with an openness to new ideas and subject areas.

The admissions team also looks for students who will speak up for causes in which they believe, and will work to get involved and get people thinking. The team will evaluate each applicant’s personal essay and short-answer responses, along with course selection, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation, to glean this information. Students should also submit a portfolio, resume or additional writing sample, a school report via the Common Application, and fall grades.

International applicants are those who will be entering, or who have already entered, the United States with a student visa. These students should follow the same application procedures as first-year or transfer applicants. All academic records must be provided with an English translation. They should also submit SAT or ACT scores, with an additional TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score if the student’s native language is not English. A third-party interview option is also available for international students who wish to express themselves beyond the application.

The University is need-blind, meaning that financial need does not influence any admissions decisions. Nearly two-thirds of all undergraduates receive financial aid. However, international applicants must submit a Financial Statement of Personal or Family Support, along with a documentation of available funds.

Applications must be received by December 1. The university does not employ Early Action or Early Decision programs, nor does it utilize a waitlist. Applicants will be notified by April 1, and will receive a decision of their merit scholarship status in February. For more information on the application process, students should visit admission.usc.edu.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites qualified first-year applicants to its stellar undergraduate programs. The admissions team reads every application to get to know each student personally before making an admissions decision. Each student is more than a set of test scores and grades.

As a result, the Caltech team looks at academic ability by evaluating recommendations, grades, and test scores. Generally, most Caltech students are gifted in test-taking as a result of high mathematical and scientific abilities, but if this is not the case, the team will look more closely at applicant recommendations and other documents. Applications are not compared against each other, even if coming from the same high school. The admissions team will take into consideration the personal background of each applicant, as well as the secondary school profile.

It is recommended that students who have taken courses or completed research outside of school include those documents in the application. Students should indicate what, exactly, about math and science interests and excites them. The team also likes to read about how future students will impact the labs, classrooms, and community. The essay will ask students to explore and discuss an ethical dilemma that they have encountered.

To apply, students should submit the Common Application or the Coalition Application with specific Caltech questions. Students may also apply through the QuestBridge National College Match. Students should also submit a $75 application fee or fee waiver, standardized tests, teacher evaluations, a secondary school report, and academic transcripts. International students should also submit TOEFL scores and an International Financial Aid Statement of Intent.

International students are those who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Financial aid is limited for international students, so it is important that all students who intend to apply for aid indicate likewise on their applications. International students must also have completed an approved curriculum required by Caltech, including, but not limited to, the IGCSE, O, AS, and A Level curriculums. IB, AP, and other options may also satisfy high school course requirements.

Students may apply as either Early Action or Regular Decision to Caltech. Early Action is non-binding and non-restrictive. However, international students may not receive financial aid if they apply early action. The deadline is November 1, with notifications sent in mid-December. Regular Decision applications must be received by January 3, with responses received in mid-March. For questions on admissions procedures, students should email admissions@caltech.edu.
