Applications are invited for the Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships. These awards are designed for developing scholars to conduct extensive work on original projects that are related to the Getty Research Institute’s annual research theme.

While enrolled in this residency program, scholars will live at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa where they will conduct research projects and complete or expand upon their existing dissertations. Fellows will benefit from access to the extensive Getty collections, as well as from meetings held once a week to discuss and work on the annual theme.

Scholars of any nationality are invited to apply, but current Getty staff and their immediate family members will not be eligible. Predoctoral fellows must have advanced to candidacy by the application deadline and must complete their dissertation during that period. Predoctoral fellows who are warded their degrees after the deadline but before the fellowship begins will be considered Postdoctoral fellows for the purpose of the application processes. Postdoctoral fellows must not have completed their degrees any earlier than 2014.

Selected fellows will remain in residence for nine months, with the fellowship extending from late September to late June. Each Predoctoral fellow will receive a generous stipend of $30,000, while Postdoctoral fellows will receive $35,000. Each fellow will be granted access to a workspace at the Getty Research Institute or the Getty Villa, along with an apartment in the scholar housing complex, airfare to and from Los Angeles, and comprehensive healthcare options.

To apply, candidates should submit the online Fellowship application form, along with a selected bibliography, doctoral dissertation plan or abstract, curriculum vitae, writing sample, confirmation letter, and project proposal. Two letters of recommendation are also required.

All applicants will be notified of the institute’s decision roughly six months after the deadline. Questions about the application process or the particular conditions of the program may be directed to researchgrants@getty.edu.
