The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights launched the Minorities Fellowship Programme in 2005. This program is designed to give individuals who belong to national, ethnic, religious, or linguistic minorities the opportunity to gain experience in the UN system and mechanisms related to international human rights. This program, held annually, is offered in three different languages and lasts around five weeks.

Fellowships are based at the OHCHR in Geneva, Switzerland. This interactive program allows candidates to explore several topics related to human rights and minority rights, such as OHCHR work, the UN system, and human rights mechanisms. Fellows will engage in collaborative work as well as individual assignments. By the end of the program, all fellows will have the general knowledge of the United Nations system, with ample understanding that is necessary to pursue human rights activism.

In exchange for their participation, fellows will receive a return ticket (economy class) from their native countries to Geneva, a modest stipend to cover living expenses throughout the program, and health insurance.

Eligible candidates will belong to a minority group, regardless of whether that is national, linguistic, ethnic, or religious. Formal education is not necessary, but candidates should demonstrate previous experience or exceptional achievement in the field. They should have a good working knowledge of the language in which their desired program is offered, as well as the willingness to assist other minority groups throughout the duration of this program. All candidates must be sponsored and nominated by a minority organization or community.

To apply, interested candidates should download an application form from the program website. This application is available in English, Russian, and Arabic. The application must be submitted in its entirety, and should include a recommendation letter from the nominating organization. Materials may be directed to minorityfellowships@ohchr.org or via direct mail to Morse Caoagas Flores, the Coordinator for the Indigenous and Minorities Fellowship Programmes.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards several grants to United States students and young professionals to study and/or conduct academic research at universities within EU Member States. Topics of study must include EU policies, EU institutes and the American-European Union agenda. Grants are available for students with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees.

Four total awards are available, for a grant period of six to nine months. The grant will last from September through June, with specific start dates negotiated directly with host institutions. Applicants may propose an area of research or study in one to three different countries. If a student is interested in studying in multiple countries, at least three months must be required in each European Union member state. The orientation date for the program will be supplied either by the Fulbright Commission or by the United States Embassy in the country of research.

To apply, students should submit a project proposal that focuses on the observation of comparative perspectives of issues of concern. These issues should be ones that involve both the United State and the European Union, such as:

internal and external security

peace-keeping

the EU and NATO

justice and home affairs

finance

trade

human rights

agricultural and environmental policies

energy

asylum

human trafficking

development

EU enlargement

Other topics may also be accepted. Proposals should relate to EU competencies and not simply Europe or countries within Europe. There should be a holistic value to the project. Successful applicants will exhibit personal, academic, and creative excellence, along with a strong research rationale and plan. They will be strong leaders and clearly indicate how their studies will benefit American-European Union relationships during and after their grant periods.

Applicants should be proficient in the language of their chosen country, though this is not a mandatory component of the application process. TO apply and for more information, students should visit http://www.fulbrightschuman.eu.

The Global Studies program at The University of California Santa Barbara invites qualified graduate students to apply for its PhD in Global Studies. This program is the first within a Tier-1 Research University in the country. During the first year of this program, students will engage in graduate-level seminars in global studies, and progress in the second year to electives within the department or across campus.

The program takes under six years to complete and provides exceptionally engaged students with the opportunity to tackle complex global issues such as the global political economy, the environment, global culture, religion, and human rights, in an effort to find solutions for those issues. Students will select a primary and secondary specialization upon which to target their coursework. The program is widely interdisciplinary, allowing students to work closely with instructors from all around campus. A field studies component, second language acquisition, and the successful completion of a dissertation are also required components. This degree prepares qualified students for top-ranked careers in academics, research institutions, and within both the private and public sectors. All courses must be passed with a grade of B or better. Students who have completed prior coursework at a comparable Research I Institution may be awarded course credit.

Interested students should apply by December 15th for full consideration. Applicants may only be admitted during the fall semester. To apply, students should submit an online application with the graduate division, transcripts, a resume, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, a $105 application fee, and a research writing sample. Additionally, students must write a statement of purpose which explains the global problems they are interested in studying, along with a detailed research agenda. Accepted students will be notified of their status in a timely manner. For more details, interested students can contact the Graduate Program Advisor, Erika Klukovich, at (805) 893-4668.

The University of Melbourne possesses a 160-year history and is one of the world’s top 50 universities. The school is also ranked as the number one research university in Australia. It boasts a student population of 47,000 and no fewer than eight Nobel laureates are alumni of the university.

Master’s and doctoral students are encouraged to apply for the University of Melbourne’s Human Rights Scholarship. The university typically awards two scholarships each year, and the duration of funding for master’s students is up to two years while doctoral students can be funded for up to three years (with a possible six-month extension). Scholarship recipients will receive a living allowance of $31,916 per year, to be paid every two weeks. In addition, if you are moving to Melbourne from another state in Australia, you will receive a $2,000 relocation grant. If you are moving there from another country, you will receive a $3,000 relocation grant. Finally, the scholarship includes $420 for master’s students and $840 for doctoral students whose study program requires that they submit a hard copy of their thesis/dissertation.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must either be an incoming graduate student or current graduate student at the University of Melbourne. If you are a current graduate student, you must still have at least 12 months left before the completion of your program. Additionally, you must plan to conduct graduate-level research in the field of human rights while simultaneously peacefully advancing human rights outside of your studies (i.e., volunteer and/or work experience). You must also be a full-time student unless compelling circumstances prevent you from doing so. Finally, you cannot have received the Human Rights Scholarship previously.

Applicants are chosen based on their area of study and commitment to human rights, academic merit, and strength of supporting documentation. The application should be completed online, and you will be notified of the committee’s decision in February. The deadline to apply is 31 October 2017. To learn more and apply, click here.
