The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute (CERGE-EI), an academic institution in Prague, Czech Republic, invites qualified students to apply to its state-of-the-art PhD program in Economics. This program is “competitive by international standards as well as adapted to the specific needs of the region,” according to Francois Bourguignon of the Paris School of Economics. Admission to the program is highly selective, so candidates are encouraged to apply with great care and expediency.

The program admits only students who demonstrate a high level of academic ability, as well as the drive necessary to develop as top researchers. Students are invited regardless of nationality, race, gender, or religion. However, students should have sufficient proficiency in English to understand PhD-level material.

Students should have a strong background in mathematics. Previous education in economics is encouraged, but not required. Students should submit an online application or deliver it in paper form. Additional materials must be submitted as well. These materials include a curriculum vitae, a statement of motivation, copies of bachelor and Master diplomas and transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.

The statement of motivation should be between one thousand and two thousand words, and address the academic and research background of the candidate, along with relevant interests and career goals. It should also state specific ways in which the program will help meet the candidate’s objectives. Other relevant documents may be submitted as well, including additional study records, certificates, and TOEFL scores.

Although there is no application fee, all materials must be received by March 31, with no exceptions. The Admissions Committee will notify each candidate when his or her application is complete. Strong candidates will be admitted directly to the first year of the PhD program, while less sufficient candidates will be invited to the Preparatory semester. Students will be notified either way in early April. The founders of the International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies program invite students to apply to the ISMISS scholarship competition, which will close on Friday, January 26th, 2018.

This program was developed by a coalition of four European universities, including Charles University in Prague, Dublin City University in Ireland, the University of Glasgow in the UK, and the OTH Regensburg in Germany. This program allows students to inquire into a broad range of modern security challenges. These might include topics of terrorism, mass migration, energy supply, cyber security, and civil war and conflict, among others. Students will also research the intelligence and strategic defense approaches utilized by governmental and non-governmental partners to react to and combat against these threats.

This program combines theory and application to help students develop critical skillsets. Students will work alongside a range of researchers and scholars from a wide variety of international partner universities and think tanks. They will also interact with practitioner experts from government and industry security sectors.

The program will commence in September 2018 and last for two years. Students will study full-time and attend small group seminars and lectures. They will engage in a variety of assessment methods, including written assignments, group work, dissertation, and oral examination. Students will encounter a wide range of international security problems, and will be prepared to meet the growing demand for these sorts of professionals. Experts are needed by both the United Nations as well as individual nation states to be able to expertly react to modern threats and challenges.

All program applicants should indicate if they would also like to be considered for a self-funded place in the program if there are additional spots left. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards several grants to United States students and young professionals to study and/or conduct academic research at universities within EU Member States. Topics of study must include EU policies, EU institutes and the American-European Union agenda. Grants are available for students with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees.

Four total awards are available, for a grant period of six to nine months. The grant will last from September through June, with specific start dates negotiated directly with host institutions. Applicants may propose an area of research or study in one to three different countries. If a student is interested in studying in multiple countries, at least three months must be required in each European Union member state. The orientation date for the program will be supplied either by the Fulbright Commission or by the United States Embassy in the country of research.

To apply, students should submit a project proposal that focuses on the observation of comparative perspectives of issues of concern. These issues should be ones that involve both the United State and the European Union, such as:

• internal and external security
• peace-keeping
• the EU and NATO
• justice and home affairs
• finance
• trade
• human rights
• agricultural and environmental policies
• energy
• asylum
• human trafficking
• development
• EU enlargement

Other topics may also be accepted. Proposals should relate to EU competencies and not simply Europe or countries within Europe. There should be a holistic value to the project. Successful applicants will exhibit personal, academic, and creative excellence, along with a strong research rationale and plan. They will be strong leaders and clearly indicate how their studies will benefit American-European Union relationships during and after their grant periods.
