The World Bank offers multiple opportunities designed to improve capacity development and knowledge sharing in the developing world. These efforts serve to enhance economic development by investing in education and strengthening human resources in these countries.

The World Bank Scholarships Program has formed a pool of over 6,000 well-trained, highly qualified professionals who serve to transform their countries and impact future generations in a productive, positive manner. Today, the program offers two sources of funding for graduate studies in development. These awards are designed for mid-career professionals and researchers.

Applications for the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program will be open in March, as will those for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program. The latter award was established in conjunction with the governments of Peru, Pakistan, Nigeria, Kuwait, China, India, Bangladesh, and the former Yugoslavia.

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to nationals of developing countries who are also PhD candidates. It offers between six and ten months of funding (with maximum awards of $25,000) to candidates to conduct research in a World Bank member country other than the fellow’s home country or nation of residence. Applications for this program will be accepted until April 23, 2020.

To be eligible for any World Bank Scholarship, candidates must be nationals of a World Bank member developing country and not hold dual citizenship with a developed country. Candidates should be thirty-five years of age or younger and be enrolled in a PhD program in a member developing country of the World Bank.

All coursework and exam requirements for attaining a PhD should have been completed, with the target thesis for all applications centering on some field of development. Candidates who are staff members or relatives of staff members of the World Bank Group are not eligible to apply.

Interested applicants may submit the completed application form, along with an agreement to the terms and conditions for a fellowship. They should also supply two completed recommendation forms: one from the host university research advisor and one from the PhD thesis supervisor. All application materials must be uploaded online.

This program began in 2013 and aims to build a network of Sub-Saharan African researchers and professionals who are interested in working in the development field, either at home or in another country.

Ten fellowships are available with a special focus on forced displacement. These ten fellows will work on forced displacement research led by the World Bank Group or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They will work in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or the Middle East. Candidates who hail from refugee and internally displaced communities, or those with proven experience in this topic will be given top priority.

At the end of the program, all fellows will contribute to a research paper. Applicants who are Ph.D. graduates or within a year of completing studies are encouraged to apply, especially graduates with experience or education in fields such as economics, applied statistics and econometrics, impact evaluation, education, health, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, demography, forced displacement, and all relevant development fields.
The World Bank invites qualified students to apply for the Winter Internship program. Applications are open until October 31, 2017. This internship allows motivated students the opportunity to improve their skills while working in a fast-paced, diverse setting.

Candidates must currently hold an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a full-time graduate study program. This may be as a Master’s degree or PhD with plans to return to school full-time. Typically, successful applicants are those who have completed their first year of graduate studies, or are already enrolled in a PhD program.

Fluency in English is required, as is relevant work experience. Preference is given to candidates with computing skills and knowledge of languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, and Chinese.

The internship is open to candidates studying within the fields of economics, finance, human development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social science (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment, private sector development, and several others. The internship provides an hourly salary, along with an applicable allowance towards travel expenses.

Interns must arrange and finance their own living arrangements in the city of the internship. Most positions will be held in Washington, D.C, though some are held in partnering locations. All are at least four weeks long. The internship is offered during the summer (June-September), as well as the winter (December-March). The latter period is now accepting applications.

All materials must be submitted online. In addition to an online application, students must submit a curriculum vitae (CV), statement of interest, and proof of enrollment in a graduate degree. Once the application is started, it must be finished without logging out. It must be completed within forty-five minutes to avoid losing entered information. More information, answers to frequently asked questions, and the application may be found at www.worldbank.org.

The World Bank Group Internship is offered during two seasons:

Summer Internship (June–September): The application period is December 1–January 31 each year.

Winter Internship (December–March): The application period is October 1-31 each year.
