The Obama Foundation Scholars Program is designed to provide promising future leaders with the support and experiences necessary to take their work to the next level. Hosted by the University of Chicago, the scholars program allows candidates to earn a Master of Arts degree focused on International Development and Policy at the Harris School of Public Policy.

This program invites applicants who are empowered and committed to service. The newly designed curriculum combines leadership experiences as well as academic and hands-on approaches to solving global problems. Through this program, students will engage in powerful networking and social opportunities that will help them solve issues across borders. At the end of this program, each student also has the opportunity to be involved in the recruitment, training, and networking efforts of future rising leaders.

The program consists of rigorous classroom studies along with skills development, leadership seminars, study experiences in New York and Washington, DC, and speaker series with innovators from a variety of industries. Students will also engage in individual and group community service projects, internship placements, and action plan development for post-program plans. Students will also engage with the local community within Chicago and the South Side and receive mentorship through the Obama Foundation network.

The foundation also hosts the Obama Foundation Fellowship program. This program is designed to provide hands-on training and resources to qualified candidates. It consists of four multi-day gatherings over the course of two years and is non-residential. The Obama Foundation Scholars program, on the other hand, is designed to last only one year, but to be completed full-time.

Applications for the 2018-2019 class are due no later than April 17, 2018. Any students who have a commitment to leadership and public service may apply, including those who work in government, the private sector, NGOs, and civil society organizations. There is no country residency requirement. Individuals who have extensive work experience and professional accomplishments, along with those who have a demonstrated commitment to community service, are given preference.

The University of Chicago invites international students to apply for its rigorous undergraduate programs. The University of Chicago offers a collegiate experience that is well-known for its culture of inquiry and exploration. International students are highly coveted to drive the diversity and conversation of this inquiry process. Over 15% of the campus community consists of international students, representing over 100 countries worldwide.

The University of Chicago welcomes students who are academically talented and intellectually curious to join in the university’s longstanding conversation. The community is dynamic and welcoming, and ready to welcome new international students.

Regardless of citizenship, the admissions team will review applications in the context of where the applicant attended high school. International applicants should apply just as any other first-year applicant would. However, there is an additional English proficiency test requirement.

For purposes of financial aid, students are considered international if they do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status. This is regardless of where students live and go to school. Students should apply by November 1 for Early Action and Early Decision I, and by January 2 for Regular Decision. Students will be notified of admission by mid-December (for early options) or late March (for regular decision).

To apply, students should submit the following documents:

Admissions Application

Application Fee (only required for students not applying for need-based financial aid)

Secondary school report

Evaluations from two teachers

Standardized test scores

Midyear report

English Language Proficiency test scores

It is also recommended that all students submit supplemental materials such as essays, a financial aid application, and a completed interview. English competency must be demonstrated through the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE. The University of Chicago only admits students with exceptional English abilities, as no ESL program is available to admitted students.

Questions about the application process may be directed to collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu.

The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program was launched in March 2017 by the University of Chicago and is designed to provide a hands-on, in-depth learning experience for developing journalists around the world. Applicants from any area of journalism or media may apply to this program, which aims to develop future leaders in business reporting.

The program lasts approximately twelve weeks and is held at the Hyde Park campus. Students will audit classes, collaborate with fellow journalists and scholars, and participate in related events. Participants may choose the classes that they audit, but sample classes might include The Firm and the Non-Market Environment with professor Marianne Bertrand or Crony Capitalism with professor Luigi Zingales.

Students will receive world-class experience in business fundamentals, as well as an opportunity to write for the ProMarket blog. They will have the ability to participate in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and to interact with Booth faculty, students, and other program participants. While enrolled in the program, each student will receive a designated study space, and upon graduation, will receive a certificate of participation.

Applicants who have experience in media and are proficient in English will be given application preference. Successful students will receive reimbursement for airfare to and from Chicago as well as any visa application fees. They will also receive a stipend of $12,000 to cover living expenses for the duration of the program.

As an exchange for the award, students are expected to audit three classes and to actively participate in and attend all classes. This includes all required readings and assignments. Award recipients are also expected to participate in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events as designated by the center. They will sign a letter of agreement upon admission to indicate that the guidelines and expectations are agreed upon.

Students may apply starting August 1, 2017, with an application deadline of October 23, 2017. Award recipients will be notified by December 11, 2017. Applications must include a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, a copy of three published news articles, and proof of English proficiency if not a native speaker. Applicants must also submit an essay of 500 words describing goals that will be achieved through the program, as well as a 500 word project proposal. Questions about the application process and completed materials should be submitted to Sarah Niemann at sarah.niemann@chicagobooth.edu.

As a result, candidates must demonstrate exceptional academic ability in scholarship as well as in teaching.

To apply, students should submit applications to one of the following program areas: Core courses in the Humanities, or Core courses in the Social Sciences/History of European Civilization Core Sequence. All applications and related materials must be submitted by October 13, 2017, with recommendations submitted no later than October 27.

Applications will consist of an online form and a complete curriculum vitae. Applicants should also submit a description of either a dissertation or their most recent research project. This should not exceed 2000 words. A teaching statement (of approximately 750 words) should also be submitted. This should underscore the applicant’s methods and goals regarding teaching a text in a general education course. Any text may be chosen (such as Plato’s Symposium, Shakespeare’s Tempest, or Weber’s Protestant Ethic). The text should be related to the chosen discipline.

If an applicant is successful with the first round of screening, they may be asked for additional materials. Following this, they will be invited on campus for an interview and tour. Final selected candidates for the fellowship will be contacted no later than June 2018.

Fellows will be paid $69,500 for the 2018-2019 fellowship year. Teaching appointments commence on September 1, 2018. For more information, please contact the University of Chicago at fellows@lists.uchicago.edu.
