Each year, the DaVinci Camp Summer Institute invites talented, motivated middle and high school students to partake in an integrated art and applied sciences program. The camp combines mathematics, engineering, science, and art instruction in a hybrid program that embodies Leonardo da Vinci’s original concepts of a Renaissance scholar.

Students will engage in three-week, all-day sessions that combine hands-on workshops and other activities. This fast-paced environment allows students to thrive academically creatively, and analytically with other students who share their passions. Students are able to engage in life on a prestigious college campus and interact with alumni from Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech, all of whom lead the program. Sessions are offered at all four campuses.

Students will have fun and learn how to have fun learning in this program, exercising their imaginations and talents as they work to understand complex math and science problems. Activities include visits to NASA JPL, learning at the Getty Research Institute, and attending performances by the San Francisco Ballet and Opera or Los Angeles Philharmonic. Students will hike at the Inyo National Forest, or learn Brazilian batucada, among a myriad of other activities.

Session One lasts from June 9 until June 28. Session Two runs from June 23 until July 13. Session Three begins on July 5 and ends on July 24. Session Four begins on July 27 and ends on August 15.

Tuition includes instruction, course materials, field trips, and snacks. Other meals and transportation are not included. Tuition is $3,000 per session, with partial need-based financial aid available for qualified students.

To apply, interested candidates must submit a General Application along with a nonrefundable application fee of $50. Admissions are on a rolling basis, with those applying early receiving top preference. Students must submit supplemental questionnaires and a video essay to the panel, as well as a need-based application form, if desired. Questions may be directed to ContactUs@davinci-camp.com.

The Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley seeks qualified and diverse future business leaders for its full-time MBA program.

Each fall, the program admits roughly 275 students. Candidates are sought who have professional experience and potential as leaders. These students will come from a wide variety of academic and personal backgrounds. Students are not admitted based on any predefined standards, but instead based on their best fit within the program.

The majority of successful applicants to the program have at least two or more years of full-time work experience following an undergraduate degree. UC Berkeley’s admissions team is particularly interested in the progression and milestones of individuals’ specific careers, as well as individual supervisor assessments.

The team will also examine each candidate’s academic performance. Students must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree or the US equivalent. Students may not have already received an MBA or comparable degree. Students’ coursework, rigor, GPA, and academic competitiveness will also be considered. Successful candidates will have a GPA of a 3.0 or better. Coursework must have been completed in college-level mathematics and statistics due to the qualitative nature of Haas coursework. GMAT, GRE, and TOEFL scores (if required) will also be considered.

Students should also submit a nonrefundable application fee of $200, along with official college transcripts, resumes, GRE and GMAT scores reports, and degree certificates from other institutions if the student’s native language is not English. Applicants may submit unofficial, scanned or photocopied documents of necessary items in the beginning stages of the review process. However, if students are invited to interview, they must provide official copies.

Naturally, personal qualities that best address the school’s defining principles will also be considered. Successful candidates will demonstrate confidence without attitude, questioning of the status quo, “student always,” and being “beyond yourself.” Students should submit an essay and two professional letters of recommendation to help these qualities shine through the application process.

Applicants should submit all materials before April of the desired enrollment year. Questions about the application process should be directed to the UC Berkeley team at mbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu.

Who doesn’t want to be happy? There are plenty of self-help books and so-called experts who promise us the “secret(s)” of happiness. But how much of what they offer is backed by science and high quality research? In “The Science of Happiness,” a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered by the University of California Berkeley, you will learn about the ground-breaking science of positive psychology. This cutting-edge, interdisciplinary field explores the roots of what it means to live a happy and meaningful life and how to achieve it. As a student in the course, you will engage with practical lessons from this field and learn how to use research-supported strategies in your own life to foster happiness. The course’s main lesson is this: That happiness is inextricably linked to having strong social connections and contributing to something bigger than yourself. You will be exposed to ideas from psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and others which have supported the science behind positive psychology.

Most importantly, the course provides students with practical strategies for nurturing their own happiness. You will get to try several research-backed activities to foster social and emotional well-being and identify how your happiness changes as the course progresses.

The main instructors for the course are Drs. Dacher Keltner and Emiliana Simon-Thomas – leading authorities in the field of positive psychology who strive to make the coursework fun and personal. Throughout the course, they will occasionally be joined by guest experts, including Barbara Fredrickson, Paul Ekman, Sonja Lyubomirsky, and John Kabat-Zinn. The class will discuss themes such as empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude.

“The Science of Happiness” begins 4 September 2017 and lasts eight weeks. It is free to attend, but if you desire a Verified Certificate for successfully completing the class, then you will have to pay $49. Health professionals can take this class and earn continuing education credits for their participation. Watching the lectures and completing the assignments will take approximately four to five hours each week, and you will be given two exams: a midterm and a final. To learn more about the course, read student reviews, and register, click here.
