California Institute of Technology (Caltech) encourages talented international students to apply to its exemplary programs. International students are considered as such if they are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time they are submitted applications. U.S. applicants studying abroad are considered U.S. citizens despite their current countries of residence.

Applications are accepted from students who have completed the appropriate curriculum that is required by their home countries. This might include the Cambridge Pre-U, AP, IB, IGCSE, or A Level curricula. The most competitive applicants will have completed three A Level exams (including the physics exam) or the IB curriculum with scores of 6 or 7 on their final examinations.

This curriculum will include four years of math and one year of physics, along with a year of chemistry and three years of English (four is preferred). Each candidate should also have a year of U.S. history or government, although this requirement is frequently waived for students who studied outside of the United States. Each student will be required to take a placement test upon enrolling at Caltech as well.

First-year applicants should submit the Common Application or the Coalition Application, both with the appropriate Caltech Questions. A $75 application fee or requested fee waiver are also required, as are standardized tests, teacher evaluations, and a secondary school report. Academic transcripts and TOEFL scores, along with an International Financial Aid Statement of Intent, should also be supplied.

For applicants considering Early Action versus Regular Decision application time slots, Early Action allows candidates to apply to as many other schools as they would like. However, financial aid is not offered to international citizens under Early Action. Caltech does not offer merit-based scholarships or financial need, and instead meet 100% of all demonstrated financial need by candidates deemed eligible.

All Early Action applications are due no later than November 1, with decisions made in Mid-December. Regular Decision applications are due by January 3, with decisions made in mid-March. Students must make their enrollment decisions no later than May 1. Early Action applicants who are denied may not reapply during Regular Decision, but if they are deferred, they may choose to be reconsidered during Regular Decision.

Each year, the DaVinci Camp Summer Institute invites talented, motivated middle and high school students to partake in an integrated art and applied sciences program. The camp combines mathematics, engineering, science, and art instruction in a hybrid program that embodies Leonardo da Vinci’s original concepts of a Renaissance scholar.

Students will engage in three-week, all-day sessions that combine hands-on workshops and other activities. This fast-paced environment allows students to thrive academically creatively, and analytically with other students who share their passions. Students are able to engage in life on a prestigious college campus and interact with alumni from Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech, all of whom lead the program. Sessions are offered at all four campuses.

Students will have fun and learn how to have fun learning in this program, exercising their imaginations and talents as they work to understand complex math and science problems. Activities include visits to NASA JPL, learning at the Getty Research Institute, and attending performances by the San Francisco Ballet and Opera or Los Angeles Philharmonic. Students will hike at the Inyo National Forest, or learn Brazilian batucada, among a myriad of other activities.

Session One lasts from June 9 until June 28. Session Two runs from June 23 until July 13. Session Three begins on July 5 and ends on July 24. Session Four begins on July 27 and ends on August 15.

Tuition includes instruction, course materials, field trips, and snacks. Other meals and transportation are not included. Tuition is $3,000 per session, with partial need-based financial aid available for qualified students.

To apply, interested candidates must submit a General Application along with a nonrefundable application fee of $50. Admissions are on a rolling basis, with those applying early receiving top preference. Students must submit supplemental questionnaires and a video essay to the panel, as well as a need-based application form, if desired. Questions may be directed to ContactUs@davinci-camp.com.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites qualified first-year applicants to its stellar undergraduate programs. The admissions team reads every application to get to know each student personally before making an admissions decision. Each student is more than a set of test scores and grades.

As a result, the Caltech team looks at academic ability by evaluating recommendations, grades, and test scores. Generally, most Caltech students are gifted in test-taking as a result of high mathematical and scientific abilities, but if this is not the case, the team will look more closely at applicant recommendations and other documents. Applications are not compared against each other, even if coming from the same high school. The admissions team will take into consideration the personal background of each applicant, as well as the secondary school profile.

It is recommended that students who have taken courses or completed research outside of school include those documents in the application. Students should indicate what, exactly, about math and science interests and excites them. The team also likes to read about how future students will impact the labs, classrooms, and community. The essay will ask students to explore and discuss an ethical dilemma that they have encountered.

To apply, students should submit the Common Application or the Coalition Application with specific Caltech questions. Students may also apply through the QuestBridge National College Match. Students should also submit a $75 application fee or fee waiver, standardized tests, teacher evaluations, a secondary school report, and academic transcripts. International students should also submit TOEFL scores and an International Financial Aid Statement of Intent.

International students are those who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Financial aid is limited for international students, so it is important that all students who intend to apply for aid indicate likewise on their applications. International students must also have completed an approved curriculum required by Caltech, including, but not limited to, the IGCSE, O, AS, and A Level curriculums. IB, AP, and other options may also satisfy high school course requirements.

Students may apply as either Early Action or Regular Decision to Caltech. Early Action is non-binding and non-restrictive. However, international students may not receive financial aid if they apply early action. The deadline is November 1, with notifications sent in mid-December. Regular Decision applications must be received by January 3, with responses received in mid-March. For questions on admissions procedures, students should email admissions@caltech.edu.
