The University of Iowa invites and encourages international students to apply to its exceptional undergraduate programs. An international student is considered as such if he or she does not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status.

International students are encouraged to apply well in advance of their anticipated enrollment date, with applications accepted up to a year in advance of the desired term.

Students should submit an online application and $80 application fee (by credit card). Next, they should upload any academic records, which include required transcripts from every secondary school or technical institute attended. Letters of recommendation, photographs, portfolios, and personal essays are discouraged unless requested.

If requesting F1 or J1 visa status, students should complete a Financial Statement showing evidence of adequate financial support necessary for a year of study at the University of Iowa. A financial verification is also necessary. Both documents can be uploaded via the student’s individual Admissions Profile after applying. Estimated cost of attendance will vary depending on each student’s area of study.

If the students first language is not English, a testing agency should send results of the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE exams. ACT and SAT scores should be sent if a student completed secondary school in the United States, or if a student is applying for direct admission to the Tippie College of Business, the College of Engineering, or the honors program. These scores should also be sent by students interested in the academic scholarships.

Applicants will have slightly different requirements if they have already enrolled in a postsecondary college or university, and will be considered transfer students. These students should submit copies of transcripts from any college attended in lieu of high school transcripts.

Application deadlines vary depending on the program of interest. Once accepted, a student must pay a $250 acceptance fee no later than May 1 for summer or fall semesters. This is refundable prior to May 1. Immigration documents for students residing outside the U.S. should also be sent. Upon admission, each student must next send official academic records from secondary schools or college to the University of Iowa.
