Each year, the Hillary Clinton Center for Women’s Empowerment at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco offers a scholar-in-residence position to emerging and internationally recognized scholars. This program focuses on both modern and historical influences that have and will continue to shape gender discourses in the North Africa region. The center, established in 1999, is at the forefront of gender studies scholarship and research in North Africa.

The Center annually sponsors the scholar-in-residence program, along with several other initiatives. It coordinates educational outreach programs for semi- or under-literate women living in rural areas. It also hosts international conferences and symposia. It also helps to develop and schedule programs for distinguished guest speakers.

The scholar-in-residence program is open for applications from scholars for the 2018-2019 academic year. The residency includes extensive administrative support, including a residence permit and institutional affiliation. The recipient will also receive research assistance and support from library research resources. In addition, the scholar will have access to a broad scholarly community in Morocco and North Africa. Finally, subsidized housing will be provided.

In exchange for the myriad benefits previously listed, the scholar must give one public lecture and engage regularly in selected center activities. To apply, applicants should submit a brief project proposal and timeline, CV, and a source of funding. The project proposal should include both a title and short description in roughly three hundred and fifty words. All applications must be received by February 15, 2018.

Questions and completed applications (along with supplemental materials) may be directed to Dr. Doris Gray, the director of the Hillary Clinton Center for Women’s Empowerment, at d.gray@aui.ma. The recipient of the residency will be notified in early to late spring of the decision and further steps.
