The Academy Scholars Program at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is designed for outstanding scholars in the beginning of their careers. The program allows scholars who are focused on the social sciences or law (particularly in the areas of language and history of cultures outside of the United States or Canada) to conduct research elucidating issues both past and present. These issues can be related to domestic, transnational, or comparative topics.

Candidates are chosen based on their resourcefulness and initiative, along with their overall originality. Individuals whose work in regions outside of the United States shows promise for exceptional careers in major institutions or universities will be given preference.

Selected candidates will be granted a two-year, in-residence, postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They will receive ample financial assistance, as well as research support, in order to engage in long-term research projects in their chosen disciplines. These scholars will receive mentors, known as the Senior Scholars, to guide them along in achieving their greatest academic potential.

Only candidates who have recently received PhDs or doctoral degrees in the social science s or law will be considered. Those who are still pursuing a PhD and have completed their training but are still in the thesis writing process may also apply. However, the PhD completion date in all circumstances must be within three years of the October 1 application deadline.

Four or five schools will be named to two-year appointments, with the scholars expected to live in the Cambridge area for their entire appointments. Scholars will receive $67,000 per year, with a deduction for candidates who have not yet earned their PhDs. This stipend will be accompanied by additional funding for conference and research travel, health insurance coverage, and research assistants. While candidates are encouraged to teach courses while engaging in their appointments, this is not required.

All application materials must be received no later than October 1. No late applications will be considered. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume (including a list of publications), a research proposal, three letters of recommendation, and a copy of the candidate’s PhD program transcript. Questions can be directed to applicationinquiries@wcfia.harvard.edu.
