Applications are now open for the Photography and Social Justice Fellowship with the Magnum Foundation. This program is produced in conjunction with the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.

The program is designed for early-career photographers or individuals trained in related disciplines. These students are ones who are motivated to deepen their engagement with photography and visual storytelling. Fellows who identify as people of color, women, gender non-conforming, LGBTQ, or part of other minority groups are encouraged to apply.

This program is designed to support diversity and creativity in the realm of documentary photography. TO do this, the program fosters critical exploration of social change through the art of photography. Every year, the fellowship allows diverse international students to pursue social equality and human rights through photography. This program invites students who are passionate about challenging injustice in the vast cultural resources of New York City.

The fellowship is designed to prepare students to become effective, creative leaders in their home communities. Fellows should, by the end of this program, become resources and models of good practice for other practitioners. They should cultivate strength and support through international colleagues. Photographers will be trained in how to use their creative skills to inspire social movements, pose difficult questions and inspire debate.

Students will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary experimentation and mentored project development. Students will also engage in critical, cross-cultural conversations about photography and social justice. Fellows will work on projects in their hometowns and communities with support from the foundation members.

The Magnum Foundation will cover the cost of travel, room and board for New York City sessions. Fellows will also receive an appropriate stipend to cover the production costs of their projects. All applications and related materials must be received by November 30, 2017.
