International applicants are invited to apply to LMU Munich. International applicants are those considered to be not of German nationality. Interested students should submit applications to the International Office, and in some cases also to the Student Office or the Foundation for University of Admissions.

Although there are few prerequisites to studying at a university in Germany, all students must submit the Abitur or equivalent school-completion certificate. Students will also need to submit evidence of proficiency in German (unless the degree program is taught in English). In addition, some programs have specific restrictions in terms of acceptance rates, qualifications, and other procedures, so it’s wise to research programs of interest well ahead of time.

If the degree program does not contain application restricts, the applicant should submit his or her forms to the International Office. Within this application, the candidate should also indicate interest in admission to a specific degree program. The application form can be completed online and submitted with all necessary documents. These should be submitted in person or by mail (email submissions are not accepted. Applications can be sent to the following address:

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität
International Office – Zulassung
Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1
80539 München

All materials must be received by January 15 for the summer semester, or July 15 for the winter semester. Applications must be submitted with additional required documents, which should be officially certified copies. Students will need to state their nationality, degree program, and native language.

Before arriving on campus, international students must also submit all required immigration documentation. This includes student visas and residence permits. Student visa processing can take several months, so it’s wise to begin this process during the application period. Residence permits may be applied for after arriving in Munich (before the expiration of a visa).

Some degree programs have restrictions based on average grades. These may necessitate applications through the Student Office or the Foundation for University Admissions, versus the International Office. These programs may also require aptitude tests or similar measures to ensure program readiness (such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine).
