The Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies invites students to apply for the 2018 Undergraduate Israel Fellowship at Columbia University. These awards offer stipends for research, volunteer work, or internships during the summer months in Israel.

The Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies is Columbia’s center for the academic study of Jewish culture and history. It is one of the oldest, and most profound, institutes of its kind in the world. All Columbia University students may apply to this program, though first-time applicants will receive priority.

This fellowship awards students resources to engage in business-related internships, language programs, university courses, and academic programs. While programs offered through religious institutions are not eligible, those that are university-sponsored are acceptable. Awards of up to $1,000 will be granted. This funding is granted at the end of the summer, once the fellow has returned to campus and submitted supporting documentation indicating the extent of their studies. Funding can only be used for tuition, fees, air travel, and lodging.

In exchange for funding, students may participate in a range of educational opportunities related to the politics, culture, and history of Israel. A minimum of four weeks must be spent in Israel. Fellows will engage in discussion and surveys of these events, and also assist with the recruitment of future Fellows.

To apply, students must complete a paper form in its entirety. They should address questions related to their trip, such as the purpose of their travel and what they hope to gain from the experience. Applicants should also submit a proposed budget, listing all expenses and anticipated income.

All applications must be submitted by Monday, April 9, 2018. Questions about the program or eligibility may be directed to Dana Kresel at drk2106#columbia.edu.
