As the United States begins to undergo a major demographic shift, individuals of Latino origin are becoming the largest ethnic group in the nation. Addressing this shift, the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership now offers the U.S. Latino Leadership Fellowship. This fellowship is a life-altering opportunity for practitioners, activists, and scholars who are interested in addressing disparities in their communities.

Candidates may be working to inspire change regarding education, health care, immigration, entrepreneurship, public policy, or any other field. U.S. Latino Leadership fellows are powerful leaders who are able to build cross-sector partnerships and to inspire new ideas and change through these active collaborations.

The fellowship provides selected candidates with full tuition scholarships and health fees for up to two years. Fellows may also apply for a living stipend of up to $25,000, depending on the nature of their pogroms of study. Each applicant will be evaluated based on their potential to reduce disparity in underserved American communities, as well as their overall academic ability.

All admitted degree program students at Harvard Kennedy School are eligible to apply for this award. Applicants who belong to traditionally underrepresented groups and are interested in education, business, public health, medicine, government, and law are especially encouraged to apply. Award decisions will be made based on academic merit and financial need.

In return, fellows are expected to participate in a yearlong co-curricular program. This program is designed to inspire fellows and to provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, and leadership skill-building. Participants will engage in dinner seminars, retreats, field experiences, workshops, and lectures, all of which are designed to promote ethical decision making and negotiation.

To apply, candidates should submit a biographical profile of 150 words or less. This profile should address the degree the candidate is attending to pursue at Harvard, as well as any relevant academic information. It should also detail the candidate’s work and professional experiences, personal interests, leadership experiences, and academic highlights. This should be written in the third person.

Applicants should also submit a single document containing written responses to two essay prompts. In the first, the candidate should discuss a topic of interest as it pertains to reducing disparities in Latino communities, as well as the applicant’s experience related to this topic. The second should discuss the candidate’s interest in the fellowship and how his or her leadership goals have inspired him or her to apply.

All application materials to Harvard University are due by December 3, 2018. Materials for the fellowship application must be completed and submitted by early February, with interviews taking place in early March. Decisions will be made shortly thereafter.

The Gleitsman Leadership Fellowship is made possible through the generous endowed gift provided by the state of Alan L. Gleitsman. This fellowship is designed to provide substantial financial support to exemplary Harvard Kennedy School graduate students. The gift, in the amount of $23 million, was awarded in 2007 and addresses Mr. Gleitsman’s hope that the world would begin to address the accomplishments and messages of various social activists.

This fellowship offers a significant financial award, compensating both for full tuition and health fees for two years, as well as a robust extracurricular experience. Fellows should expect to engage in a welcome retreat and significant work in social activism and innovation as well.

To apply, interested candidates should submit a biographical profile of under 150 words. This profile should address the degree that the applicant intends to pursue at Harvard Kennedy, as well as any concurrent or joint program that is being pursued. The profile should also include information about residency, professional and personal accomplishments, and awards or educational credentials. Each candidate should also submit two written responses addressing the candidate’s commitment to social activism, innovation, and leadership.

All application materials for the Harvard Kennedy School must be received in early December 2021. Fellowship materials should be submitted on February 4, 2022. Interviews will be held in March 2022.
