Each year, the British Academy offers ten Global Professorships to fund the work of outstanding international researchers. These fellowships allow world-class researchers and scholars to pursue their individual goals while also improving the overall United Kingdom research base.

Each appointment lasts for four years, with the goal of completing an entire project of a single research focus within this time period. Professors will be expected to teach as well as conduct research, and should plan on researching some aspect within the social sciences or humanities. The program is designed for scholars who are currently employed outside of the UK in a full- or part-time position. Each applicant must be prepared to take up a long-term employment or secondment at a UK university or research institution.

Projects must be full projects within themselves, and while recipients are expected to teach and commit themselves fully to their research endeavors while engaged in the program, there is no set guideline or restriction for how the balance of teaching and research must be divided. This should be based largely on the host institution’s needs and preferences.

Applicants may be mid- or senior-level researchers in any field within the social sciences or humanities, so long as they are internationally-recognized and employed outside the UK. Recipients will receive up to £250,000 per year for the first three years, with the fourth year expected to be funded by the UK host institution. Applicants may begin their projects between December 1 2018 and May 31 2019.

To apply, candidates should submit an application via the British Academy’s Grant Management System, Flexi-Grant. All materials must be submitted no later than Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
