Each year, the University of Illinois Foundation offers the John Rovensky Fellowship. Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2018-2019 academic year, each in the amount of $9,500. These fellowships are provided by the foundation established in honor of the late John E. Rovensky and support doctoral students who are writing their dissertations in U.S. business or economic history.

John Rovensky was the youngest ever vice president of the National Bank of Commerce and later went on to become chairman of the executive committee of the American Car and Foundry Company. He retained a profound involvement in economics and the academic profession until his death in 1970. The fellowship is the result of a gift by Mr. Rovensky to the Lincoln Educational Foundation.

These fellowships may be combined with other funding sources, such as grants or teaching positions. However, they are non-renewable. Applicants must be working toward Ph.D. degrees with U.S. business or economic history as the area of major interest. Recipients should be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited American university. Applicants who are preparing to teach or research will be given preference, as will those who have completed all graduate coursework by the fall of 2018.

A committee comprised of seven scholars in American economic and business history will make all final decisions regarding the fellowship recipients. Applicants are judged based on several criteria, including their academic ability and interest in business and economic history. This should be evidenced through a letter of recommendation from a professional who knows the candidate well. The successful applicant will also have demonstrated ability in research and writing, along with exhibiting potential for a career in teaching and academic research.

Applicants should also submit a dissertation proposal and application form at http://thebhc.org/john-e-rovensky-fellowship-application. All materials must be received no later than Friday, March 9, 2018. Winners are announced at the Business History Conference Banquet at the Baltimore Embassy Suites in Baltimore, Maryland. Questions about the application process may be submitted to mbucheli@illinois.edu.
