Carnegie Mellon is well-known for its welcoming campus of international undergraduates. It is ranked seven in the United States for the highest percentage of international students, with this population making up over twenty-three percent of the degree-seeking undergraduate student body in 2016.
International applicants are students who are citizens or permanent residents of countries besides the United States, and will be studying in the United States on a temporary visa. International students will essentially follow the same application process and schedule as other undergraduate students. However, unlike other undergraduate students, international students may not apply for financial aid.
Applicants should use the exact name listed on their passports to eliminate confusion in the admissions decision process. The TOEFL or IELTS is required if the applicant’s native language is not English. A score of 102 or better on the TOEFL or a 7.5 on the IELTS is required. Interviews are recommended, but not required, as these can help measure a student’s readiness for classroom engagement.
International students may apply Early Decision, Regular Decision, or Early Admission. Early Decision is binding, and requires that students apply by November 1. Applicants under the age of seventeen may not pursue this option. If accepted, students must withdraw any applications submitted to other institutions. Regular Decision is more popular, and requires that students apply by January 1. This is a non-binding application and allows students to apply to multiple institutions in order to compare offers of admission. The Early Admission deadline is also January 1, and students will enroll by May 1.
The university also admits a small number of transfer applicants. These students should apply by October 15 for spring admission, or February 15 for fall admission. Application deadlines may differ for fine arts, architecture, art, and design majors. More information can be found at https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu.
