Heidelberg University has issued a call for international applicants. International applicants are highly sought after members of the Heidelberg community, and should follow a set of straightforward procedures to submit applications. The international programs at Heidelberg are inclusive of all nationalities and promote a curriculum of inquiry, discourse, and self-discovery.
Students must first apply within the university for all subjects. The application will then be filtered based on nationality and the desired program of study. Individuals who are citizens of an EU or EEA (European Economic Area) member country will follow the same application procedures for German nationals. Any students who have received a German university entrance qualification (“Abitur”) will also apply as if they were German nationals. A formal application is still required.
Any other international applicants—those who are not EU or EEA members, or those holding a university-entrance qualification acquired in another country (such as a high school diploma), must apply as international students. Students should have a solid grasp on the German language, and additional qualifications may be required for certain programs.
If an applicant’s higher-education qualification is not equivalent to the Abitur, he or she must pass an assessment test (“Prüfung zur Feststellung der Eignung ausländischer Studienbewerber für die Aufnahme eines Studiums an Hochschulen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland” – so-called “Feststellungsprüfung”) before beginning studies at Heidelberg. The university offers accelerated preparatory courses for this examination.
When ready to apply, applicant should submit a formal application, assessment test (if necessary), evidence of knowledge in German, and any foreign certificates of education. All materials should be submitted by July 15 for the winter semester, and January 15 for the summer semester. Admitted students will enroll in person at the International Relations office, and at this time all original documents (such as school certificates and university documents) must be submitted. For more information or to ask specific questions, applicants may email studium@uni-heidelberg.de.
