The Polytechnic School, located in Pasadena, California, offers exemplary and well-rounded education to K-12 students from all around the country. Each year, the school admits no fewer than 18 and no more than 20 students to grade 6 and ten to twelve students for grade 7. While no students may be admitted in grade 8, 10, 11, or 12, up to thirty students may be admitted to grade 9.
The application process does not differ significantly depending on the grade level. Applications to “non-entry” grades may only be considered if space is available through the process of attrition. Application materials can be found, completed, and submitted online. Applications for the 2019-2020 school year open in October 2018.
Families are encouraged to submit materials early, as the Admissions Office will process applications as they come in. In order to do so, all application materials must be submitted no later than the listed deadline.
All applicants must submit a formal online application, including a $100 application fee, by January 2019. Fee waivers are available for students who qualify by contacting the director of financial aid. Teacher and administrator recommendations should also be submitted, ideally by current math and English teachers, as well as from one school administrator (such as a principal or counselor). Invited referees will be sent secure links to complete confidential recommendations. Recommendations must be submitted by February of the application year.
Applicants should also take the Independent School Entrance Exam. Students should take the exam only once during the application season, with the last available test date being January 2019. Visits to the school are also required as part of the admissions process. This allows the admissions team to get a better look at the child on a personal level. Students entering grades 6-7 do not receive individual interviews but instead are encouraged to visit.
Transcripts must also be supplied from the previous school year, as well as first semester reports for that application year. A student statement addressing the applicant’s backgrounds, experiences, and interests should be supplied, with parents given the option of competing a parent statement to provide additional input on their sons or daughters. These supplemental materials are also due by February 2019.
