Each year, the Louis Bacon Environmental Fellowship at Harvard University brings together young leaders dedicated to protecting and improving the globally shared environment. This program helps fellows obtain coveted connections with well-established international leaders in environmental health and science, allowing them to foster the relationships necessary to make a serious environmental impact. The program encourages new ideas and innovative change, and helps participants build cross-sector partnerships.
Each fellow in this program is awarded a full tuition scholarship, along with complete health fees for up to two years. Fellows are also eligible for an additional stipend of $10,000, depending on their programs of study. Applicants will be evaluated based on their academic credentials, as well as their potential to impact environmental policy and practice. Applicants may be any student entering their first year of study in any of the Harvard Kennedy School’s masters’ degree programs.
In return, fellows are expected to participate in a co-curricular program offered by the Center for Public Leadership, as well as to work with their peers to establish professional connections and environmental solutions. They should also expect to participate in field experiences, networking opportunities, workshops, seminars, retreats, and a speaker series.
To apply, candidates should submit a biographical profile of fewer than 150 words, detailing the candidate’s background and academic interests at Harvard Kennedy School. The profile should also include details about professional and academic accomplishments, leadership achievements, awards, credentials, and the intended degree of study at Harvard. Each applicant should also submit a single document containing written responses to two essay prompts, both focused on the candidate’s passion for preserving the environment.
Applicants must be accepted to Harvard Kennedy School in order to receive the award. Applications to Harvard must be submitted in early December 2021. Fellowship applications should be submitted by February 2022. Interviews will be held in early March 2022 by the Louis Bacon Environmental Leadership Fellowship Selection Committee.
