The University of Maryland is committed to enrolling a wide, diverse body of students from every country around the globe. International students are applicants with non-American academic records or those who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Any students who hold or intend to possess an F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor visa to study in the United States are considered international students.
International students should submit similar materials as domestic students. They will also submit TOEFL/IELTS scores. The admissions committee will take into consideration these scores as well as grades and records from all institutions attended. Original transcripts must be supplied, along with an English translation, if necessary. Transfer students must also submit course or syllabi descriptions of all credits taken. An application fee of $75 is also necessary, and this is not refundable. Other required information includes standardized test scores (either SAT or ACT), personal essay responses, two letters of recommendation, lists of extracurricular activities, and resumes.
When applying, it is important to note that all applicant should use their full legal names as they appear on their passports. This is necessary for the issuance of all required immigration documents. Any supporting documents that are not specifically requested by the admissions committee should not be sent.
In total, the admissions committee considers twenty-six factors as part of their holistic application review process. Accepted students will be notified via email. Applications are considered complete when both the online application form as well as all additional required materials have been submitted. Student majors are not considered as art of the review process; as a result, applicants may not indicate double-major preferences or minors when applying. However, certain majors are popular and limit the number of students that can be accepted. These programs do review student applications based upon intended major.
Students who are admitted to the University of Maryland must submit a photocopy of their I-94 Arrival/Departure Records and visa stamps. This documentation is necessary for F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor visas. For optimal admissions consideration, as well as for merit-based scholarships, students should apply by the Priority Deadline.
